Foraging for seaweed

If all goes well with my husband’s immigrant visa we’ll be moving to Hawaii in a couple months and I’d love to start foraging wild SEAWEED. Has anyone ever done it? Can anyone recommend a website or book? I wouldn’t want to harvest the wrong kind (if there is one!). Thanks for your input.

I haven’t done it (we have picked wild greens from the beach before in Florida – I forgot what they were called – very salty like sea weed). but be aware that some seaweed “farmers” are sort of a “juristiction” on certain areas. Meaning they farm the seaweed from certain areas and sell it so you may not be able to pick from those area.

You might want to check with locals once you get there. Any local foragers would be the best source of info. There is also a Yahoo Group called Forage Ahead. You might get some info on there.
