Anyone here ever eat sweet potato leaves?

If so, do you have any information about their nutritional value?

I believe that the leaves of non-sweet potato plants are poisonous. But I have read that the leaves of sweet potato plants are edible.

  • Bump.

    C’mon, someone here must’ve...

  • I learned in my environmental science class that REGULAR potato plant leaves are toxic. This is an excellent question for a botanist. Personally, I would not attempt eating it until you get information from a credible source. Good Luck!

  • Potato plants are nightshades, and the leaves are considered poisonous for humans to eat.

However, sweet potato plants are not in the same family, and I found out last night that the leaves are typically sold in many asian countries for people to eat (not just for garnish).

Just curious to hear about taste and nutritional value from someone who has first hand experience with eating the leaves. Sounds like a possible candidate for a hot weather green in my part of the country.

  • okay, when I was a kid I was totally obsessed with any leaf in my moms garden. I munched on broccoli leaf, tomato leaf, strawberry leaf, and anything else I could get my hands on. I’ve since stopped but that compulsion explains my love of spinach, cabbage and lettuce. I”m always looking for a new leaf to eat. Sweet potato sounds good but I don’t know if they taste good. My mom thankfully kept me from getting regular potato leaves so I assumed sweet potato was the same.

  • Vegfean, even greens have toxins… you just can’t eat them all the time and every day. You should vary your food.

As for edible sweet potato leaves? Hmmm, I’ve never seen them. I wouldn’t know if they are edible…

  • I looked it up on wiki and it said they are edible but about being raw and edible I do not know. If you try any new food you think is safe only use a little bit, that is just a safety rule for anything.

  • whn i was in africa i ate them cooked they are delicious but never tried them raw but i think its even better, but i thin its best to eat them tender if raw

  • According what I’ve read, sweet potato leaves are edible. I just ate a leaf from my garden. If I’m not dead tomorrow, you’ll have your answer. lol

Here’s a nice chart of edible vegetable parts: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/ne…

  • dude, don’t die! so many of us are enjoying all your thoughts on “other stuff” way too much . LOL

  • Haha, thanks. I doubt one leaf of anything would kill you. Maybe just make you a little sick. It didn’t taste bad at all.

  • It’s tomorrow and I’m still alive! yay! :-D
