Raw cashews and poison ivy

jellibijellibi Raw Newbie

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with a raw cashew allergy? I get blisters and intense itching in my mouth and rectum after eating them. I did some research and saw that this sometimes happens to people who have a severe allergic reaction to poison ivy (which I do) because cashews (and pistachios and mangoes) are in the same family as the poison ivy plant. I wanted to share this because it took me a really long time to figure out what was going on. Hopefully I can help out someone else out there!

If you are ever suffering from intense rectal itching/mouth blisters/itchy lips… it may be due to raw cashews—especially “cheap” raw cashews that aren’t processed well- like from Trader Joes. I got my worst reaction after eating a bag of their “In the Raw” trailmix and it is also bad after eating raw Lara bars that have cashews.

Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi jellibi,
There are 2 great threads on poison ivy that may provide you with helpful information:

Good luck & best of health to you!

PS: I might be wrong, but I don’t think that Lärabars are truly raw

Thank you so much for the information Greenghost!

Wow, this can be scary stuff. I just found a website that said that if people who have a reaction to mango/cashews/poison ivy were to eat a truly raw cashew (most that claim to be raw are steamed) it could be fatal. Here is the website:

This is an important thing for raw people to know about!
