what if i don't want fruit?

I never crave fruit, it never sounds good to me, and after I eat it I am never satisfied. I ALWAYS want greens though. That is what sounds good to me when I wake up in the morning and that’s all I ever crave. Everyone is talking about how you need to eat tons of fruit to be successful on raw and I just don’t eat that much fruit – maybe a couple apples and a couple bananas a day. Any suggestions?

  • Keep eating greens, but make sure you’re meeting your caloric needs. Sooner or later you’re body will probably gravitate towards fruits.

a couple bananas and a couple apples is fruit! That’s a fair amount. Eat the greens. It’s what you need.

When I first went raw, all I wanted was greens. Now ten months down the road, I’m definitely a fruit bat.

  • Sounds about right. You are just craving what your body needs right now.

Many raw fooders don’t eat much fruit. I have talked to someone who has been raw for 15 years and she was really doesn’t eat any fruit. She eats seaweed, greens, superfoods, cacao etc. The raw world could be divided into two camps the people who love to eat a lot of fruit like the 80-10-10 ers, and then on the other hand there are equally as many people who eat mainly greens, vegetables, nuts, seeds, seaweeds. A lot of those people say that they don’t like the effect of the sugar in fruit, and that a lot of it is hybridised, and flown in from far away, and caked in persticides. So you know, it is quite normal really for a raw fooder not to eat much fruit. I go in between eating lots of fruit and none at all, just depends what my body wants, and that is always changing.

  • Thanks so much everyone. I’m glad to know that only wanting greens is normal and that I won’t fail if I don’t eat tons of fruit!!! I decided that I will add more fruit to my juices in the morning and call it good. I just had my blood tested by my nutritionist and all my levels were good, so I guess I am on the right track! Thanks to everyone who responded, you made my day!

Listen to your body! I know there are times I really want sweets and fruit, then there are times(like now) where I can barely stand having a banana or tiny bit of fruit in one smoothie. It is possible to add a little fruit to food and not have it super sweet, but if your body is really craving greens then it must be needing something so best bet is to listen to your body!

For me, I have a problem with the amount of nuts. My body doesn’t do well on many nuts but I found out recently I’m OK on seeds so follow what body wants.

  • iheartveggies, it is great that you’re feeling better about where you are right now. Eating what feels best for our bodies is hard to do because we have (mostly) been taught NOT to listen!

Fruit is not only the sweet stuff either.

Peppers, squash, cucumber, zucchini, avocado and tomatoes are all fruit, but not sweet .

When I went raw, I wanted CILANTRO everyday..for a year!! LOL. I discovered that cilantro is an herb that has great cleansing properties, especially for heavy metals. ( I was in college with photography as my major, I was dipping my hands and breathing in toxic chemicals daily.)

Now I don’t need to eat it as often, I do not crave it.

Your body will adjust to what is right for it, and that is constantly changing! Good for you for listening to what you know you need.

  • ejshames- thanks for pointing out that peppers, squash, avocado, and tomatoes are fruit! I knew that avocado was a fruit, but the other ones I wasn’t sure about. I eat loads of peppers, tomatoes, and avocados, so I guess I am getting more fruit than I gave myself credit for!

durianrider- It’s not so much that I don’t like the sweetness of the fruit. I do eat fruit everyday, just not to the extent that others do. For example, there is no way I could sit down and eat 9 bananas at a time. Maybe 4 and I wouldn’t even want to look at a banana for the rest of the day. I eat it, but only because I think its good for me, not because that is what I am craving. And I definitely do not have bagels, ice cream, and pizza crust in my house- those things were left behind a loooong time ago :)

I know what you mean! I just can’t mentally picture myself sitting down with 10 apples or 5 bananas in front of me and just downing them… but really that’s what I do when I make smoothies lol! I usually put in 2 bananas, pineapple, mango, or big pile of strawberries, sometimes all 3 or 4, a cucumber or two and then a huge heaping pile of spinach and cilantro. I find it’s easier for me to get enough calories and carbs if I mix it all up with a lot of greens to balance it out. I make a whole blender full, and divide it into 2 meals. I say eat what you like for now, eventually your body will probably crave the fruit :)

  • lol, my favorite meals consist of up 15 – 20 bananas, 5 just wouldn’t cut it for me :)

I go through times when I don’t want sweet fruit (or ANYTHING sweet) at all, and other times when it seems I ONLY want sweet foods (still raw – just apples, mango, etc.) I agree with all the people who have already said: Listen to your body! I can’t count how many times I ate what I was craving even though it seemed weird and then later found out that what I was eating had exactly the nutrients I needed for some health issue I was trying to overcome. :) Gabriel Cousens has helped tons of people recover their health, and his plan includes nothing sweet for at least the first three months, but TONS of greens. Doug Graham’s plan seems to work well for others, and his is mostly sweet fruit. There are different plans/lifestyles/diets that work for different people, because people are different. It sounds like you’re doing what’s best for you. :)
