Coumadin and raw diet

Hi. My mom says she can’t do the raw food diet because she’s taking coumadin (among other meds) and therefore cannot eat a lot of leafy greens – the vitamin k decreases the effectiveness of coumadin (which is an anticoagulant drug). She has a St. Jude’s valve in her heart that allows the blood to flow in and out. Her doctor says she must stay on that med for the rest of her life. Does anybody know if there’s any way around this? She is totally unhealthy – has all kinds of diseases and really needs healing from this kind of diet.

  • Thank you all for your responses. I will discuss these with her and see how she would like to approach this. Right now her doctor is her god and it’s been hard for me to explain to her that what they are saying is based on a SAD diet and also that the meds do mask the symptoms. I’ve told her that the coumadin she’s on is what they use for rat poison and shouldn’t that send a red flag, but her doctor wants her on it. I know time will also help her in that she will see how my life is changing since going raw. I am slowly coming off thyroid medication (she’s on that too) which will show her the possibilities for her life.

I will definitely contact Tree of Life/Hippocrates and I will also look for some good fruit dishes to make her. Again – Thank you!

  • Bluedolfin: Ah yes. That is true…as I remember my own unwillingness to take responsibility for my own wellness at one time. I remember about 6 months ago I stumbled across something on the internet talking about the raw food diet and how I thought to myself then that that was the most silliest thing to me and how I would never do that. He he he. That still makes me laugh to think about it.

  • Meditating: Thank you for the info on the Dr. I will research this and talk to my mother about that. About a year ago I brought up flaxseed oil to her too and she turned that down because she read she couldn’t do that with coumadin. So, I’ll share with her what I learn and we’ll go at her own pace.

blueyz: Good idea on going to the dr with her. Hopefully he’ll be willing to work a more natural approach.

Bluedolfin: Saw the edit. Yes my mom has a definite purpose now – my little girl. I’ve just moved back home (MN) a few months ago after being away in FL for 10 yrs so my mom missed a lot of my first daughter’s life. Now with my second daughter she gets to be a big part of it and she is just eating that up!

    I have a renewed hope. :o)
