  • OK girls I'm thrilled for those bargain prices. Those are some fabulous sites. I thank you, my husband's wallet thanks you and ultimately mi tummy-tum thanks you!! You RAWk!!

Speaking of financial crunch have any of you watched Tonya Kay videos before?? I love this video she is talking about our economy and it being so rigid and ready to snap/break and the video was made last year before all the major havoc officially came out. Check it out

She is a cool little character. Wish I had the sense and security of being different when I was her age. I would have had a better time in my twenties LOL

Ok as always much appreciation for your input and sharing of good deals.

    Peace

    Lo~

I love buying from http://www.vitacost.com/ -- can't beat the $4.99 shipping. I think I bought my raw cacao nibs there for a little under $15 bucks, plus they've got great prices on Flax, hemp and pumpkin seed oils, not to mention hemp seeds themselves.

I wish they sold more raw products but what they do have is very competitively priced and their service thus far as been fantastic.

  • Ok anyone have CHEAP really raw nut links to share. I'm so annoyed coz I've literally been on the phone with Oh!Nuts [out of brooklyn, NY] for over 30 minutes trying to find out WHERE their advertised raw nuts are from. No one can answer me and have been forwarding me back and forth. They make a point to note that the almonds are pasteurized but the other nuts i.e cashews, brazils and walnuts have nothing noted. So the girl gave me big attitude telling me the ONLY way to get raw nuts is for them to be in the shell. So I had to school her. She kept tryin to make her point. She was so annoying honestly BUT I repeated that nuts from other countries are most likely NOT pasteurized and all I am looking for is WHERE their nuts are from. Again she was clueless.

Earlier, I also spoke to a lovely person from JustAlmonds but as we all know any almonds from the states ARE pasteurized uuggghh!! She is saying that their family's almonds are flash steamed for short burst and then immediately vacuumed off. I asked the temp but she said "Not that hot and its done for a burst only". I said well steam is a byproduct of boiling water and it takes 200+ degrees to boil water no?? So now she is kinda taken aback LOL. According to her, the flash steamed almonds WILL still sprout Hmmmm. I had posted on another thread about the PPO pasteurizing but now after her saying these steamed ones will still sprout has peaked my curiosity. She is sending me some more info with temps and sprouting abilities so once I hear I will let you all know....BECAUSE their nuts are less than $5lb!!! HelloO thats unbelievable for raw nuts. But again I need to see the info.

OK any comments and opinions about this situation??

  • so heres the update on raw almonds....it's an adobe E so can't cut and paste but will give the gist...

"Surfaces of the nut may reach up to 160 degrees with the inside of the nut not heated nearly as much. In fact, preliminary studies funded by ABC reportedly show no significant degradation of the almond's essential nutrients. Moreover, the steam pasteurized nuts were sprouted thus stoking the ongoing debate as to whether pasteurized nuts are "raw"

So what say you fellow raw fooders??

  • Unfortunately, that lady was kinda right about the only way to get really raw nuts is out of the shell! That's because companies use high temperatures to break open the shells.

HOWEVER, in Thailand they found a way to seamlessly and quickly break open shells without heat, and so some websites offer really raw nuts from Thailand. They are super expensive because unless you're IN Thailand, generally the only people that care about them being really raw will pay extra. So that sucks for us.

BUT, I have tasted the really raw ones, and just the raw ones, and I haven't noticed a difference. Beyond that, pasteurization in just a flash may not actually raise the core temparature of the nut, which is what is important in raw. It may just be killing bacteria on the outside of the nut.

The reason I'm saying this is because my friend bought pasteurized raw almonds, and she got them to sprout! If you can get them to sprout, they're raw! I don't care what's been done to them, if they'll sprout they're alive!

So that's a little bit of good news, a little bit of bad news!

  • well the Oh!Nuts chick just contacted me. She saidshe contacted the companys they get their supplies from and their Brazil nuts are from Brazil--can you imagine!!! And the cashews are from Brazil and Peru. Sadly the walnuts and almonds are from California. But as far as I know, only almonds are mandatorily pasteurized right?? Uggggh so much research into whats raw and whats not---driving me bonkers LOL

Well oh!nuts has some GREAT prices and you can buy by the pound I believe:

    cashews $6.99 lb

    jumbo brazil nuts $5.99 lb

    macadamia $8.99 lb

    walnuts $7.49 lb

I think I'm gonna try justalmonds' steam pasteurized altho it's a 5lb min...for 5 lb. box of Mission (27-34 size) Almonds is $19.11 [or $3.82lb that's an awesome price!!] I just noticed this on the site-->Steam (H2O) and Propylene Oxide (PPO) treatments only affect the outside surface of the almond. Unlike juice, milk, eggs and canned foods, almonds can achieve equal safety protection against harmful bacteria without affecting the inner core.

Hmmmm, I'm gonna try to sprout some when I do make an order...I will post my findings.

I just have to share this...

I placed my order with Natural Zing ( http://www.naturalzing.com ) in the wee hours Wednesday morning. BAM! Less than 36 hours later, it's on my door step!! I'm having fun with all kinds of goodies today....yum, yum!

It doesn't get any better than this!!!

  • LOL good for you Pixx...I love getting my foodie boxes too! Oh meant to ask you...that link JRmushrooms are those vanilla beans raw?? I called and left message asking them, a guy calls me back leaves a lengthy message BUT never answers the question of the drying/processing temp they use ((big sigh)) ((make that a double sign))

Reality is not like I'm going to use that much so I'm buying them darn it!! I was in a regular grocery store and they have some organic spices and they had ONE vanilla bean in a glass jar and it was about 12 bucks!! Shyzza thats crazier than ME :P

Well wishing everyone a happy, fun-filled safe weekend!

    Peace

    Lo~

  • pixxpixx Raw Master

I'm not 100% so I don't really worry about things like spices and vanilla beans being raw. Sorry, I really don't know.

12 bucks really IS ridiculous!! wow... Must be one hellova bean!

    :P

  • Yeeeeeah tell ME!! After seeing those prices I immediately ordered the 16 beans from your recommended site!! Now I'm anxiously awaiting them bad boys. I want to try the Raw-eO shake recipe...I could devour a whole bag of those dang cookies back in the day...that's why they were not allowed in my house LOL I was at WF and they had a little better price for the VB....only $5.99 for ONE hahaha I could and would not buy one for tht price. For that price it better come with a money back guarantee of an ogasmic experience :P

Winona...my crackers are being shipped monday...due to having a P.O. box address :( but I'maaa waiting. I actually indulged today while at WF and bought some tomatobasil sea crackers by Two Moms in the Raw...they were slammin!! I ran home made some hummus from sprouted chickpeas---it's was kinda off...IDK if its coz they are sprouted or the tahini I just couldn't place my finger on it...so I added a plum tomato and some extra herbamare...left it in fridge for an hour and when I pulled it out, I plopped some on one of them little delights that I spent way too much for and my mouth was doing the happy dance followed by a tongue tango finale!! Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm so NIIICE

hey Aubbie & findamanda (et al.)

Here is another source for spirulina and chlorella at a much lower price than Lucky Vitamin.

    http://www.nutsonline.com/seedsspices/spirulina.html

    http://www.nutsonline.com/seedsspices/chlorella.html

I know there were some comments about Nuts Online having less than desirable products also (such as stuff with dye, or preservatives) but if you click on the tab at the top that says "health nuts" it will direct you to only those products *without* undesirable ingredients. Yea, I wished they didn't offer the other stuff too, but they are trying to reach the wider public, ya know! I think it's nice that they are also catering to us.

bizinbluejeans Nutsonline.com has raw unpasteurized Marcona almonds. I think they make the BEST almond milk; I don't even bother straining.

    http://www.nutsonline.com/nuts/almonds/raw-marcona.html

I've not tried the following two, but nutsonline also has unpasteurized organic regular almonds, from Spain:

    http://www.nutsonline.com/nuts/almonds/organic.html

And *pasteurized* regular (I'm assuming California)

    http://www.nutsonline.com/nuts/almonds/raw-no-shell.html

Trader Joe's, if you have one local to you, also sells raw Valencia almonds. (from Spain- which are, to my understanding, unpasteurized.)

    Have fun shopping!

    :~)

  • I was just going to do a new post today asking where people get their raw items for the best price/discount and came across this thread. I love it when that happens! Anyone have a good source for Raw Organic Cacao powder? I'm a newbie & trying to keep it simple & also looooooooove chocolate so would like to try making some healthy treats.

I just got the raw Valencia almonds at Trader Joes. I got some raw cashews there too--but recently read that cashews are always heated to remove the skin unless it says otherwise. Feedback please :)

    Tx!

  • Hey rawfoodgoddess,

This is the cheapest I've found:

    http://www.amazon.com/Certified-Organic-Cacao-Powder-Peru/dp/B000KNMIYS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1253749883&sr=8-5

    It's great!

    Hope it helps,

    Nicole
