MSM questions

SarahJSarahJ Raw Newbie

Hi All. I have been reading some really good things about MSM regarding skin, nails, hair, and joints. I have decided to give it a go. Does anyone have any insights to share?

  • I just ordered some myself. I am not sure how much to take, when, and for how long.

I take it and I have improvement in the dexterity of my hands when I do. I also stand better (I’m in a wheelchair). I take 6 caps a day, sometimes more if I need it. Each capsule is 1000 mg.

i just ordered some MSM powder. It says to start with 1 tsp and work up from there to 1 TBS or more. It said its best to take it with vitamin C like add lemon juice to the water. I haven’t got it in yet but im excited to start taking it.

start with MSM light. start with a 1000mg the first week then increase to 2000mg the 2nd week. do that till you get to 10 weeks then gradually go back down the same way. and stay at 2000mg for as long as you want. the idea is to saturate you body with sulfur. since that is the first thing that goes when you apply heat to your food. so we are all sulfur deficient.

    no doubt about it.

i took MSM for 5 months. and did 9000mg pretty much the whole time, because I tore a ligament in my ankle. so that was one of my protocols for 4 weeks.

I also took 25,000mg for 25 days. It was something that david wolfe had mentioned. he said do 25,000 for 25 days and see what happens to your hair. the results vary. my hair got alot stronger and also turned ALOT lighter. I had reddish blonde hair as a child and got darker as i got older. then i did this protocol and almost went back to my original hair color, till i stopped taking that much half way, because that was the last thing i wanted. reddish blonde hair

I’ve been taking it for about 3 weeks now and I don’t know if its just my diet or if its the MSM, but my skin is glooowing. Next time however, I’m going to get the capsule ones because I don’t like the bitter, face-twisting and eye-squinting taste of the powder variety. It also ruins the taste of my green smoothies unless I make a BIG judge load of smoothie.

worleyhimself2—lol,whats wrong with reddish blonde hair? I think it will look awesome on you! 8P

  • My hair used to be whiteish/blonde when I was younger. I’d love to get back to that colour naturally. Does anyone recommend a particular brand of MSM, preferably one I wouldn’t have to buy online?

After I’ve worked up to, and down from, the 10 weeks could I just make sun tea out of pine needles. They’re the source of the packaged MSM, aren’t they?

  • SamiliciousSamilicious Raw Newbie

I get my MSM from the health food store. Is there anything wrong with that? I think the powdered one that I got was the ‘Natural Prairies’ brand. Does the brand really matter?

  • SarahJSarahJ Raw Newbie

Wow, thanks everyone. I am really excited now about starting. I am going to start with 1 tsp (that’s 1000 mg, right?) and go from there. I already feel amazing with the changes I have made – I can’t wait to see what happens from here.

  • Hey Worley…when you were taking 25,000 mgs a day, how much vit c were you taking???

Also, a good source for pure MSM made in the US, not china is http://www.kornax.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Sc…

then click on MSM products & looks for Rich’s brand, which comes in 2 lb jars or the 7 oz. jars. I would try the smaller jar to see if you like it. For me, it made my dry hands nice & smooth without any hand lotion!

  • I was wondering because apparently many of the brands are synthetically derived. http://www.methylsulfonylmethane-supplier-manuf… Distilpure is supposed to be one of the best, but you can only buy it online, and it’s expensive enough without shipping.

thanks samilicious, it is a darkish red now. it was just too big of a change. but now i am use to it.

m@tt when i took msm. i dont know how much vitamin C. it was probably 5000- 10000. thru foods and nano vitamin c and camu camu.

I hate the taste so I put it in my bath. Still gets absorbed into my body that way with no nastiness.

  • Is it true that with capsules you don’t absorb as much as if you are in take MSM in a powder or liquid form? Does the powder form dissolve well in water and how bad does it really taste? I am an athlete who is interested in incorporating into my diet and seeing how it helps with recovery as I prepare for a marathon!

  • I bought a bottle a couple of weeks ago b/c i have really bad knees and was hoping for some relief. Admittedly, I didn’t take it regularly because it is very expensive and the dose recommended would cost me @ $150 a month! Where do u guys buy yours. I wonder if it’s cheaper online and how do u know if it is good quality?

  • SarahJSarahJ Raw Newbie

I won’t lie to you – it doesn’t taste good. But, just mix it with a strong juice and do it like a shooter. Follow with a pure juice chaser and you should be good. Boy, that sounds like I drink – which I don’t – used to be a bartender though. :)

sgmom2 – I bought mine at the health food store – cost about $24 for 300g. If I take 1000 mg/day it will last me a month, if I double up on the dose then it’s 2 weeks. Either way, I didn’t think it was bad. I bought the brand recommended by the store employee – Flora is the brand name. I couldn’t say if it is raw or not.

  • I started taking it because I have arthritis in my wrist and I’m a runner with weak knees. It took awhile, but I noticed a big improvement in my nails. I think I’m going to up my dosage for a bit & see what happens. I currently only take two small doses a day.

  • SarahJSarahJ Raw Newbie

    raw-mama – what are small doses – 1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, ?

  • I take the powder if I’m making a smoothie and pill if not. I’m not sure the pill dosage, but I’ve just been taking one. The powder I’ll do about a teaspoon.

I just got my MSM. I plan to start taking it at 1000mg/day for one week. Then increase by 1000mg/day the next week until I get to ten weeks. Then decrease by 1000 mg/day each week until I get back to 1000mg/day. Then do I keep going up and down like this, or what?

Do you have a reference for David Wolfe’s discussion about MSM? I have the sunfood diet book, is it in there? Thanks, you are an MSM encyclopedia!

  • worley,

Did you take the whole 25,000mg at once, or half in the morning and half in the evening? Do you need to take extra vitamin C with it also? Does it help more? I still have a bunch of rosehips I’ve picked and dried and I’m thinking those be a good source.

The MSM I bought is a liquid in ultra purified water (TriMedica). It has a tiny taste to it but definitely not bad. Almost like a small pinch of salt in water. Which is the one with the bad taste? The powder? The one I have is 390mg/tsp and it says to take 1-2tsp. one to two times a day so I take 4tsps/day (1560mg/day).

  • I bought the Prairies Natural brand and the taste is awful. I’m up to 15,000mg now. Honestly, it was easier to drink the oil that time I tried the gallbladder cleanse. This morning I tried to take the msm with a rich nut mylk blended with berries. I’d take a sip of that and then take a bite of bitter greens sprinkled with lemon juice. That seemed to kill the chalky taste. Maybe the sweetness of the berries enhances the bad taste of the msm, and it would taste better in a green smoothie.

  • Thanks for helping out with the msm info! I’m thinking of maybe dropping down to 10,000mg and doing that for a longer period rather than the 25,000mg for 25 days. Is it as likely I’ll see the benefits in haircolor? I’m also looking to completely heal my knee which I injured in a dance class last summer, and hurts a bit still if I twist it the wrong way. Also, I want to speed up the healing of blemishes from acne. I’ll stick with the 25 day thing if I need to though.

    worleyhimself2-

Which brand (brands) of MSM do you use? I have tried three so far. David Wolfes, NOW and Vitamin Shoppe. David’s seemed to have the best results and Vitamin Shoppe was pretty good but the NOW brand was not good. It didn’t even seem like MSM - it didn’t taste bitter at all.

  • SamiliciousSamilicious Raw Newbie

Raw_Chocoholic, I also have the powdered Natural Prairies brand at the moment. Does anyone know if there is anything wrong with this brand or is all MSM the same?
