Valeria – are you sure the oil makes you breakout? I have fairly oily skin but I only breakout when I’m detoxing or hormonal which makes me believe it’s more of an internal thing. I just finished an 8 day Master Cleanse and my skin is better than ever. I understand if you just don’t like the shine, but be careful with the cleansers you’re using. If you strip away the oil your skin may want to overcompensate by producing more, and then it’s just an endless cycle. I’ve had much better luck using an exfoliating cloth from www.chinaberry.com with a fatty soap in the morning, and using extra virgin coconut oil as a cleanser and makeup remover at night. Yes, oil as a cleanser! I learned about that concept when I used to work at The Body Shop. It helps to turn off the oil. You can always blot with a tissue too.
I said if i saw this post again i would recommend coconut oil … I use it everyday… first i ex foliate gently with a facial scrubber “sea foam” and then i slather on some coco oil … take a shower and when I exit the shower i mist my face with purified water and then wipe clean with a dry was cloth.
When your skin breaksout it is detox (probably induced by the heat and if you are sweating)- our skins natural oils don’t cause us to “breakout”. Using soap can cause your skin to get too oily, If you are are using soap to wash off that oil – you are probably overdrying your skin causing it to overproduce oil. Especially if you are using clay soap – Clay anything is very drying even more so than soap. Yes, the clay will get rid of the oilies but even though it is hard to make the connection, it is further drying out your skin causing your skin to even further overproduce oil. It is the same concept with shampoo. Stop using soap on your face!. I used to have very oily skin and acne problems – now, I just splash with water. The only time I use soap is to wash my hands or armpits and when I shave.
I second the coconut oil. It seems opposite to the problem I know but it works!
Another thing you might try is a natural astrigent (if you are so wanting to use “products” to cleanse yourself – even though it is not necessary) make a rosemary astrigent by making rosemary tea and than let it cool and put in the frig. Apply with fingertips or cotton ball on your oily parts. Rosemary works great for the oilies. So does sea salt actually. Splash your face with a little sea salt water (you an make yourself with warm water and sea salt) – be careful of your eyes though!
The last thing is to get some sun – it will dry up the oil on your face.
Thanks guys!
I knew in the back of my mind that the clay soap just might make me overproduce the oils. I’m not breaking out a lot, but it’s still there. I guess I was just looking for a quick fix with the soap… bad idea.
ardesmond2 – what’s the reason for misting your face after a shower? Seems like you’ve got a good routine going!
amysue – I’ll have to start using coconut oil for makeup removing! Thanks!
queenfluff – I didn’t know about rosemary as an astringent. How cool!
I mist afterwards to help loosen up the coco oil … makes it a little easier to wipe off your face… you could also use a warm damp wash cloth..
I have searched for some tips on how to get rid of oily shine on face and found out these
Always wash you face with cold water. Secondly use a sunscreen wehn you are going out in the sun.
What does everyone think of oil based soaps? I have a olive oil one that doesn't seem to do too much damage.
