Lucuma is a South American fruit, powdered down and sold on many websites like Natural Zing and rawvegansource.com. It's sweet and has a maple-like flavor. Not exactly like maple powder, but it's similar. :)
Hi PassionatePiscean!
What to substitute may depend on the recipe you are planning on making.
We have what is called 'maple sugar' in the regular markets where I live, but I don't know if it is the same as maple syrup powder. It is grainy like regular sugar. I think it is just crystallized maple syrup.
Date sugar might be a possible sub, too:) You can make it by dehydrating and grinding chopped dates.
Lucuma powder is lovely but definitely not nearly as sweet as maple sugar.
I also live in maple country (Vermont) and also have access to maple sugar. I used it in a maple cream recipe found in 'Raw Food Real World' which worked just fine. I'm still not super clear on maple syrup powder but I think the maple sugar would be the best substitute.
I just found the brand I use: (I purchased mine at City Market Co-op)

I use maple syrup (or agave) instead and just reduce the prescribed amount of liquid that goes into the dish. If you can't get lucuma, substitute with vanilla seeds or extract instead. Joyce is right, lucuma is not a substitute for maple syrup, it is a flavour.
I agree with achin that lucuma is probably the best substitute; adding some extra agave will make up some of the sweetness. Unless it's a tiny amount, substituting with vanilla will not work.
There *is* a "powdered agave" product that's supposedly raw, though I wouldn't recommend it, as it's mainly inulin, which causes huge amounts of gas when your body tries to digest it.
