  • Yes, it's interesting to me that humankind is empathetic toward some animals like dogs, cats, penguins, dolphins, chimps, etc., but then apathetic toward others, like cows, pigs, chickens, lobsters, mosquitos... I think people *do* make the connecti…

  • Since winter squashes don't have a high water content, I'm not sure you'd get a lot of juice out of them. Squashes take a lot of space in the garden, so that's something to keep in mind too.
  • Update: Here is the eBay one I bought - a great deal for $25 ($40 with shipping). It is brand new and did come with the case despite what the description said (or perhaps I got lucky). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STR…

  • I just ordered a Miu from eBay ($40 instead of $150+) and it arrives Tuesday. Can I get back to you? I am also going to get a metal mesh butcher glove from my local restaurant supply. Someone here recommended that and it's a brilliant idea.

  • I think it's smart to lean into it slowly if you are not currently vegan or even vegetarian. Just that is a big transition for most people. When you feel confident that you can feed yourself, you can think about the details like gaining weight, gett…

  • If it's an Asian(ish) recipe, orange is a great substitute. For what you're making it sounds lovely.
  • Daikon radish, carrots and beets, beets, beets! Golden beets, red beets, pink beets. I'm sure turnip would be good too. White zucchini is a good substitute too. I'm not fond of cucumber pasta, it's too juicy.

  • It's nice that they encourage you to do the research and make your own decisions instead of just telling you what you "should" do, eat, wear, etc. This site is generally worthwhile: http://www.goveg.com/optimal_vegan_nutrition.asp And another link f…

  • Awww, any veg in a non-veg household will face similar issues. I agree with Superfood that the sooner you can start taking responsibility for feeding yourself, the better. (Good practice for college, too.) Maybe offer to make dinner for everyone one…

  • A few weeks ago I ran into Whole Foods and they had none in bunches, but I've been able to find it at the farmers market.
  • I have no problems digesting anything, but my husband can't handle sprouted legumes other than mung beans either. He's fine with seeds, including lentils.
  • Oh you poor thing! Is there something you can bathe in that would help the itch?
  • I have been reading this exact thing everywhere for weeks, so I thought I would pass this along, from the wonderful Rose and Ronnie and everyone at the Organic Consumers Association - a trusted authority: "This week, we received numerous calls and e…
  • Garlic is easy to grow! Any decent nursery sells garlic for planting - you stick the individual cloves in loose soil in a sunny spot, water them a bit, and in a few months, you dig them up and you have garlic bulbs. I've seen holy basil in nurseries…
  • I feel you are overwhelming yourself before you even begin. Breathe deeply! Everything is perfect right now. You are perfect. The house is perfect. The kids are perfect. You will not find consensus on "ratios," percentages, calories, etc. even on a …
  • P.S. Congratulations on taking this step, and taking it together! You will be a glowing bride and groom. (And you make a gorgeous couple.)

  • You don't need one if you're just starting out, although they are loads of fun. We went a long time without one, so we made plenty of soups, sushi rolls/wraps, and raw pastas, which kept us interested. I suggest browsing recipes here or in books and…

  • I doubt you'll get consensus on this question, but I don't really tally my nut consumption, or fats, calories, etc. I'll go a few days without having any nuts at all, then I'll be in the mood for cashew cheese sauce and eat it for two days. I'm sure…

  • Chattanoog -- could it have been synesthesia? Megadeath...you know, because of the headbanging and all.
  • Floaters and lights can also be signs of a detached retina or vitreous detachment. It can require laser surgery. I love David Wolfe as much as the next person, but if you're over 50 or have been to any Megadeth concerts, I'd check with an eye doctor…
  • I'm confused about what works and what doesn't - if he's concerned about health, why is he not concerned about cholesterol, for instance? Or saturated fat? What does he mean by "extreme examples"? What about foodborne illness, like salmonella? That'…
  • It would be difficult to get agreement on these questions, even on a raw food website. My personal advice is to transition at the pace that feels good and right to you. If you were vegetarian, try going vegan, while adding raw foods to your diet. Tr…

  • Angie, I would like to be invited over for dinner! Sounds like we have a similar palate! I also want really strong flavors in my food. Ugh. I can't handle bland food. I'd rather go hungry, seriously.
  • LOL Carnap, and, me too. Also I agree with Superfood2 - it's hard to please a SAD palate at first. I don't eat anything that doesn't taste good, so I can imagine how frustrating this is for you. What did you cook/eat before? You like fruits, so do y…
  • Pixx, I would stick to the recommended size batch -- the little guy needs to eat and drink in certain quantities. I think my recipe is 12 cups water, 1 cup sugar, five teabags, about a week's brewing time. We go through it slowly, so I don't make it…
  • Honestly I wouldn't take the ACS' word on anything that falls under the alt-med umbrella. They are riddled with unfortunate conflicts of interest in terms of their relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biotech companies, etc. I believe it's o…
  • I've heard it takes a d@mn long time to get something out of the bottled tea. I'm surprised nobody around you has any to give away. Have you checked Craigslist or freecycle in your area? I have about a dozen in the fridge, but I'm not sure how to sh…
  • We've eaten well the last few days, I just can't remember much besides dinners. Monday was sweet potato spring rolls (recipe here, http://goneraw.com/recipe/sweet-potato-crepe-wrappers), Tuesday we had zucchini pasta with sun-dried tomato alfredo sa…
