Diabetic cat

I have a cat who is diabetic and requires insulin shots twice a day. They are easy to give although the insulin, syringes and blood tests are expensive. I've been feeding him the cat food the vet sells which is specifically for diabetes, and I recently bought him a cat food made by Blue which has human grade ingredients. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience feeding a diabetic cat a raw diet. If I could cure him, it would be great.

    No but if he were mine, I would encourage him to be raw... With a cat that wont be hard to do... smile You can get the meat man at the grocery to grind up some inexpensive chicken parts, bones and all... Your cat will love you and so will your billfold and I bet the diabetes disappears... Much to your Vets dismay, as you wont need to buy his products or services...

    If I had to guess, I bet you were feeding him the typical man made dry cat food that contains all those additives which can throw off the serum glucose levels...

    Hope your kitty feels better soon and you can put that money into savings for something fun!!!

    One of my cats was starting to get diabetes--he was drinking tons of water, and when I took him in, his insulin levels were starting to get high. I changed his food (he had been eating Science Diet), and he is okay now, and continues to be okay more than a year after changing the food. I was able to head off the pending diabetes by getting him off of high-carb food. However, two other cats I had several years ago died of diabetes, and it breaks my heart to know that the culprit was the food I had been giving them--food recommended by vets.

    I too lost a cat to diabetes and another to chronic renal failure. I strongly (understatement) agree with all RawLibrarian and Waterbaby have recommended and I'd like to add my input.

    There has been a lot of misinformation regarding pet food put forth by the major pet food manufacturers and I hate to say it, probably the Veterinary industry as well. Veterinarians make a lot of money selling their prescription pet food which is full of animal-by-products and other crap.

    Do yourself a favor and research cat food as much as you can. Here's a great website that I wish I had read long ago. http://www.catinfo.org/

    There's a lot of websites out there with similar information, but the bottom line is that you want to try and feed your kitty a diet that is as close to what nature had intended these little obligate carnivores to eat. That consists of a grain-free, WET cat food high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Raw is obviously better however, not always practical or possible for some people.

    Anyway whatever you decide, wet or raw, please discontinue to feed your kitty that stuff they sell at the vet. Even canned Fancy Feast is better than that crap.
