  • I read Jeremy Safron’s “The Raw Truth” the other day, and he says yucca, aka cassava, is too dense and starchy and eat raw. Here is a link to an article on kids who were poisoned by yucca: www.annointed.net/Article819.html – 42k

  • I’ve read bee pollen is anti-viral. Try to get the fresh frozen bee pollen, though. You can check w/your local farmer’s market or health food store. :)

  • snoopy 99: I just found some raw coconut flour online at: http://www.livingtreecommunity.com/store2/produ… I don’t know if it will work. You might need to combine it with coconut oil/butter to get that creamy texture. I’m not sure what else to use a…
  • kminty: I’m not sure. You might be able to approximate the taste, but I’m not sure if you can replace the electrolytes, at least not completely.
  • I’ve always been told grains are a great source of long-term energy, but I find all the fiber and minerals in the green smoothies do a pretty job, too. The hemp protein powder and chlorella I use as an add on help even more. :)
  • Thanks, Zoe! What a blessing! :)

  • It’s a rice bran based supplement, a great source of vitamin E. See sunfood.com, and type in tocotrienols under Search for more details. I made a recipe once, and it was included for the health benefits, not for the taste, so I left it out. :)

  • I guess you could always put it into your green smoothies, if you want the health benefits w/o having to deal with taste! :)
  • Millet, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth are gluten free. Wild rice is not raw, and not a true grain (it’s a grass), but I believe it’s gluten free as well. :)
  • This organic bakery in my hometown started using gluten free oats last year. Don’t know if it’s some kind of hybrid, but it’s certified organic. :)
  • You could try a savory green smoothie, and see how it works for you w/o any sweet fruit. Lemon or lime, tomatoes, avocado, olive oil, and even salt, etc. can be used to make it more palatable for you. I even throw in leftover young coconut once in a…
  • healthymonster: I like the Irish Macaffee recipe on this website as a coffee/cappucino substitute. This recipe uses maca and cacao to get that coffee-like flavor. Also, roasted maca is not raw, but a lot of people seem to like it as a coffee substit…
  • LimeLady: I asked them once about whether their spices are organic, and sometimes they do source organically, depending on availability. :)
  • Yes, some people hate the smell! It’s very pungent, you only need a little bit. I took to it right away, though. It’s kind of an individual thing. :)
  • I imagine it’s raw if it’s pure hing. A lot of Indian and Pakistani stores carry hing, but in order to cut down on costs, the manufacturers will add edible gums and/or turmeric. So it’s probably not raw if you buy unpure version. :)
  • Sue: Sure it’s fun to eat, but I miss being hungry, believe it or not! Food’s more enjoyable to me when I have an appetite. I look forward to the day when I can eat less and live more. :)
  • Yeah, everybody’s different. I’m finding out that I need tons of protein and calories in general to function well. Because of my caloric requirements, I consume quite a bit of fat as well. On an 80% raw diet, I’m consuming 2700 calories a day. And I…

  • meganthevegan: Great idea! I’ve heard you need to take your wheatgrass separately because it can lead to digestive issues, but I once took a shot, and then proceeded to eat my lunch. No issues whatsoever! :)
  • If you don’t have one already, I think you will need wheatgrass juicer, or one of the Green Power juicers, a juicer that can handle wheatgrass. :)
  • When eating raw, it’s a different quality of feeling full. Instead of a heavy feeling, you feel light and ready to motor. I think it takes some getting used to. Long-term raw foodists actually prefer this feeling. :)
  • I just make one serving of nut mylk for myself at a time. I never strain, I just blend the nuts. It’s pretty smooth mixture, almost as smooth as going through the straining process. I know, it’s a lot higher in fat, but it’s all healthy fats!
  • humananimal: Thanks! anngoingraw: If you’re just transitioning to raw, maybe you’re not too worried about this, but a lot of coconut oil out there is labelled raw, but it’s actually been processed at high temperatures. Truly raw coconut oil should h…
  • hello anngoingraw: Coconut oil is about 80% fat, and the saturated fat in it is very healthy. The saturated fat in coconut is composed of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA’s), which is pretty rare. These types of fatty acids are more likely to be conve…
  • I have never seen roasted walnuts, so that’s probably correct. I don’t think any heat is required to open the shells, either. I think people would go for roasted almonds and cashews before going for roasted walnuts, anyway. They don’t seem to be as …

  • Ok, I was wrong about kiwi. Those little black things inside the kiwi are seeds, but they are not viable, probably because they are hybridized? Anywho, my bad. :)
  • I checked my trusty “Acid/Alkaline Food Guide” by Susan Brown and Larry Trivieri Jr., and kiwi is rated as highly alkaline. Different books and different websites have different info, but kiwi and most fruits are alkaline. It all depends on how the …
