  • I’ve read nuts are concentrated and acidic, and need to be balanced with greens, which are not as concentrated and alkaline. So if you eat nuts, have a salad. Or add nuts to your green smoothies. :)
  • I’ve heard the taste described as having the hint of chocolate and cinnamon. I use it in smoothies, and in my cooked grains with maca, Artisana coconut butter, salt and cayenne. It does have a real affinity with cacao and maca. :)

  • Silicon and sulfur are two of the most important minerals for your skin. Silicon is essential for skin elasticity, but it’s only found in certain foods. A lot of people, including raw foodists, might not be getting enough of these minerals. Here are…

  • Warning about MSM powder: It is an acquired taste. It’s a little bitter, but I’ve gotten used to it. I love the effect it’s starting to have on my body. It’s supposed to be good for the hair, nails, etc. as well. :)

  • A lot of raw foodists find that nuts and seeds make them feel heavy and sluggish. Seeds, however, are considered a lighter food than nuts. Hemp, pumpkin and flax seeds are considered the best. Find out what works for you. Avocado has lipase, which m…

  • Not sure about ratios, but veggies in general, esp. green leafy veggies, are more nutrient dense. When it comes to green smoothies, a 60% fruit/40% greens ratio is recommended. Eventually, per Victoria Boutenko, you should try to go 40% fruit/60% gr…

  • Yes, you can get DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) at the health food store or supplement store. :)

  • I had an endoscopy done a few years ago. Not uncomfortable, since you’re sedated, but I wouldn’t call it fun, either. Have you tried DGL yet? I’ve been on DGL the past few weeks, and it coats the esophageal lining to protect it from the stomach acid…

  • Here are a few recipes from Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine: 1) Granola: 1c almonds, soaked; 1c coconut pulp; 1T mesquite meal; 1T pumpkin pie spice; salt. Process ingredients until chunky, dehydrate 3 hrs at 145 degrees, then 2-3 hrs at 115 degrees…

  • It worked for me, but my cravings might not be as strong as yours. I did the comparison taste test, and raw treats are far superior! Non-raw treats, and even many commerical raw treats, and too sweet for me. And the non-raw sweets just didn’t digest…
  • Also, it seems you should try to limit sweet fruit. Not sure why, maybe it works through your digestive system too quickly, and you end up not retaining as much weight. :)

  • Coconut is a form of heart-healthy saturated fat, just like cocoa fat (chocolate) and palm fruit oil. However, the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut are more likely to converted to energy for the body’s needs, instead of getting stored as fat. Com…

  • If your boyfriend ever feels adventurous, you can try durian, but this sweet, pungent fruit isn’t for everyone! :)
  • You can also try young coconut, but it needs to be the meaty kind of young coconut. The jelly-like pulp of some very immature young coconuts just won’t do it. I agree with kathrynintheraw, avocados would likely be the best substitute. :)
  • Hey, I came up with a couple other ideas. Sunflower seeds are pretty inexpensive, and you can start sprouting your own. Flax seeds are also very healing, and fairly inexpensive. Also, one thing I’ve been working on is creating what I really want in …
  • Tunacupcakes: It sounds like a really tough situation for your right now. Maybe you can start out small, with a daily salad. And maybe add some fruit to your diet. I’m sure this has occurred to you, but sometimes food banks have fresh, raw food on h…
  • I see keeping moist seeds in the fridge kind of like keeping any kind of leftover dish in the fridge. It should keep awhile, but it’s best if consumed sooner rather than later. I don’t keep my soaked seeds around longer than overnight in the fridge.

  • I was trying to figure out why walnuts go rancid pretty quickly if not refrigerated or frozen (aside from the high oil content), and I believe it might be because they break so easily. Once the nut is broken, the rate of deterioration likely increas…
  • High oil content nut like mac nuts, pine nuts, brazil nuts and walnuts should be stored in the freezer. They should keep about a year. The other nuts and seeds are fine in the fridge for six months. :)
  • AKAAuburnEyes: Based on what I’ve read, there is a smaller percentage of people who use protein as their primary source of fuel. I believe I’m like that. If I have a fruit smoothie in the morning w/o any concentrated protein, I will crash a couple h…
  • I have a couple additional thoughts. If you have the type of body that runs well on carbs, you’ll likely feel strong eating a lot a fruit. However, if you do better with a high protein diet, eating a lot of fruit probably won’t keep you blood sugar …
  • This is an interesting thread that has me thinking if some people are just more susceptible to diabetes or hypoglycemia. We have a number of contributors to this thread who don’t seem to be affected adversely by fruit sugars. However, some people ar…
  • I just wanted address this issue of fruits w/o criticizing anyone or stepping on anyone’s toes. LOL. :) I think seeded grapes are fine, but the seedless varieties, from what I’ve read, tend to be higher in sugar and lower in minerals. Also, if the s…
  • I’ve heard differing opinions on this issue. One school believes in a low fruit diet, favoring non-sweet fruits, and low to medium glycemic fruits. Sweet fruits (bananas, papaya, mangoes, dates) and dried fruits are eaten in strict moderation. Anoth…
  • Izhpt: You’re welcome! I like this brand because it’s raw, organic and cheap. Better than paying $6.00/lb. for dried coconut online. :)
  • Coconut oil and coconut butter are the same – it’s essentially coconut oil. Artisana has thrown a wrench into the the whole thing with their version of coconut butter, which is ground from whole coconut. Not a criticism, I love it and use it everyda…
