Luna – Thanks! I intend to explore/expand my talent in art in some way; I just wish I didn’t have to pay bills and things would be so much easier to figure out – maybe I’ll buy a tent and live and paint in my parents’ backyard ;) heehee People think I’m a hippie now…:)grin
Oh, yeah! I heard something funny tonight that I may use… In the play “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” that my brother was in tonight, they talked about how people always ask “What do you do?” meaning “Tell us what you get paid to do and we’ll know who you are.” The painter Marcel Duchamp (French, a few hundred years ago) didn’t like that type of question, so he would say “I’m a breather.” Then if people questioned him, he would say, “I spend more time breathing than doing anything else, and I’m very good at it.” Heehee I decided that answer is totally like me. :)
om – yeah, when is your surgery? And how long will you be down for that?((((((love)))))) and ((((((healing))))) coming your way! Thanks, ardes :)
st – Yeah, the vita-mix makes those seeds realize they were just pretending to be whole pieces of anything :)
Good morning, all! The sun is shining – and no snow – so I’m planning garden prep. today. Shhhh… don’t tell the weather; I don’t want it messing with my plans heeheehee:)
Well, goodmorning and HAPPY Friday!!
Am i the only one is up?
berry – Hellboy is a comic book, that was made into a FANTASTIC movie!! The dude in my avatar IS Hellboy, sometimes refered to as ‘Red’ by his girlfriend who can spontaniously create fire! Hee Hee Heeeeee! He is a demon that was brought into our plane of exsistence during WW2 by the Nazis. Hitler was dabbling in the occult, near the end of the war when he was getting desperate. (That’s a fact actaully! I think!) Well of course the good guy foil there plans and little baby Hellboy is adopted by a professor of paranormal stuff. Being a little baby, he is a clean slate, and is taught to be a good being. So now with his….is pyrokinetic the right word, GF and his amphibious friend namesd Abe Sapien, they are part of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and defense. An orginization that is super top secret, and doesn’t ‘exsist’. one of the quotes: “When things go bump in the night, we are the ones who bump back” If you want more, here is a link, and you can join us big geeks!!! RENT THE MOVIE!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellboy
Hi, luna! I’m out of young coconuts = disaster! So I have to go to the hf store soon :) They’re not quite open yet… “open, open, open.” :) heehee
Oh yeah, and he loves little kittens. And those cicular things on his head that look like goggles, are actaully horns (remember he is a demon) that he cuts and shaves down to ‘fit in’!! keep in mind he is HUGE, and RED and has one big sttone formarm with scroll work carved into it. Yeah, sure without the horns you fit in real well HB!!!
Happy Friday Ladies….
OM are your gettin surgery “ouch” hope all goes well. I see Angie sent you some good vibrations.. I just want to second those good vibrations.
Can’t play to long today it’s Friday and I would love to get out of here by 3.00 so that I can go soak up some Vitamin B and then do a nice workout.
Family update, my daughter and some of her friends wrote a song from start to finish and had there music teacher compose some piano and drum beats for it.. The song is about saving the earth it’s really touching.. Anyway’s they song the song for the school and some people were really impressed… from there they had the music put on music sheets and now they are going to a live recording studio to have it pressed on CD… There school is so cool nothing like when I was growing up.. And if that isn’t enough it’s DISCO day at school so we were up all night glittering her outfit for the dance off they are having today. I had to stay up extra late to make her some RAW _TREATS as they are selling the fake crap cookies, chips at the disco dance.
PEACE
Oh hey ang. I think we were posting at the same time!!! I am down to one coconut now! must go and buy more!!! I know have 3 nice organic looking coconut drink cups so far. I have popped them intot the oven on really low heat to help dry them out quicker so they won’t have a chance to mold. I will let you know how it works!! :)
Hey ARDES, how cuuuuuuuute and wonderfull of your kid to do that sort of thing. Kids are the future of this planet, we have to make sure they are aware of the impact we have on the earth. Hopefully they will be able to save Mama Earth!!
ardes – how does your dayghter handle the social aspect of being raw – is it her choice to be raw, or more from you guys? Superman is in kindergarten and very social. He isn’t all raw, but even not having sugar at school stuff is too hard for him to handle a lot of the time and he ends up eating the stuff he gets at school parties even on days I send other treats with him. My brother is worried that if I try to restrict him too much, he will end up binging and going crazy for junk food when he is older and I don’t have as much control over what he eats. Thoughts? Help? Ideas? I don’t want to force him to be all raw, but I want to get him used to eating and liking lots of raw stuff and not loving pepperoni pizza and sugary foods.
ang – i think if Supe. eats raw at home it is wonderful!! I can see how it would be hard at school. It’s ok for kids to be kids once in a while! i am impressed with what he does eat though!!!! Good for him!!! I kinda agree with your brudda, I used to get that way with junk, becaudse I NEVER had it growing up. So let him do his thing, and it should all work out in the end!! Not that I know anything, I am kidless!!
Thanks, luna! I agree – I went crazy on watching TV after not having one until age 14 – That’s all I ever wanted to do when at friends’ houses, or my grandparents’ house, and at home once I was older. He doesn’t eat all raw at home, either, but mostly whole-grain, natural sweeteners, natural peanut butter, black beans and almond cheese on organic corn chips, etc. and lots of smoothies, raw desserts, and some good salads.
Angie most of this has to do with my daughter knowing why we eat this way. She is nine so it’s a little easier to explain to her why she shouldn’t eat sugar and cooked food. I make her homemade lara bars and all kinds of treats to make sure she never feels left out during snack time at school. The kid eats a salad everyday at lunch with a different dressing and never complains, but the real problem comes from the teachers who don’t understand. They always make these sly comments on how they wish they could eat that way or just stay away from the red meat. The latest horror story just happened yesterday, one of the teachers bought her a watermelon and gave the other kids goldfish. The teacher asked why she didn’t want any of her watermelon, and my daughter in a very polite way says “because I have organic watermelon slices in my lunch bag” needless to say this pissed the teacher off and she acted childish and walked off with no comment. So I guess to answer your question her dad is so neurotic about eating healthy that it has rubbed off on her and we have created a little monster. Me and her sit and watch the cooking shows every now and then and try to Un-cook the recipes, also eating together helps a lot. HOPE THIS HELPS… as I am not sure if I agree with your brother.
ardes – thanks for the feedback – I think it depends on the personality of the child and how it is handled. Superman just wants to be doing what everyone else is doing, and there is a lot of learning to be done about that and not just about food. I think you’re right about understanding why. It’s challenging, but Superman can learn his own way soon enough. I did go crazy on TV for a while, but now I rarely watch it, so there’s hope. I feel that the best way is to transition him to healthier choices and patterns of eating and life; not just try to force him to do something that doesn’t make sense to him; I feel that’s why people rebel – they’re being forced to do something they don’t understand or embrace, so they push against it harder. We’ll figure it out :)
Kids are more in touch with how their body feels than adults, for the most part… However, if the child is “forced” to eat things they don’t like (is it a matter of taste or feeling in the body?) or “everything on the plate”, then the child learns to ignore how the body feels. Maybe focusing on how the child feels after eating the food might be a gateway for the child to choose healthier foods rather than an “intellectual” understanding.
Thanks, bluedolphin – it has been hard cuz we live with my parents and my mom is a stickler for eat some of everything, plug your nose and force it down if you don’t like it, etc. and there have been some awful scenes at the table. I finally told her I am not interested in forcing him to eat veggies, especially the cooked ones that don’t have enough nutrition left to be worth ANY drama at the table! He eats a lot of whole grains, which have most of the nutrients we need, and then I give him smoothies and the occasional “salad-making party” when I just inform him we’re having salad for this meal, & then I have plenty of apples, dried cranberries, nuts, dehydrated buckwheat sprouts, etc. for him to load on top of his greens so it will be filling enough. He usually complains, but when he realizes the choice is salad: eat or don’t eat, he will usually find some combination of stuff he ends up really liking.
angie~ Yah, I know it’s hard especially when there are others involved. There is a difference in introducing new foods, trying something and forcing. More and more is being said about maybe some of the aversions children have to foods are linked to food allergies.
Keep up the strength to make a great world for your son.
bluedolphin & everyone – thanks for the encouragement, ideas and support! I just know I’ve learned how to tell what works for my body by eating what sounds good, so I figure that is how Superman can learn it, too, by having healthy choices around. Some days I try harder and make a lot more raw stuff, and other days I just let him choose from things he can get for himself, like wholegrain toast with honey or a sandwich or something, and the days when he doesn’t like the sound of any of the cooked things, I know that’s a day I can try out more new raw choices. I guess I just needed a chance to “talk” it out with you all, so I could realize that I already know what to do, and that I just need to do it rather than being so worried about what my mom or other people think about traditional meals. :) Thanks again; my confidence as a mother just went waaaay up!
Okay, changed my pic again. The spoon had a hard time staying on (I need a different glue than all the ones we had here) so I didn’t get the dripping ice cream exactly how I wanted yet, but it’s still kinda fun, I think. :)
angie~ The new pic is really coo1! Congrats on the mommy realization! It’s tough when parenting styles conflict. And, there seems for some there is some identity thang attached to food.
Just had a thought (yes that was that burning smell)... your mom wants to be a great grandma and valued (this is a given)... is there some area that you can delegate to her for her to focus on with Superman and be able to be ok with letting you take the lead around food? Of course this would need to be agreed upon by your folks and you.
I have talked to her about discipline/parenting him a few times, and she is cool about doing things my way when she knows what that is… She usually tells him to ask me what he can have to eat, or she asks me before she offers him some of what she made. And after I told her I feel really good about his eating while grains and then getting in the fruit & veggies wherever I can, and I explained to her that I had researched it to be sure he is getting all his nutrients, she is cool about letting me run the show. Finally! As far as an area where she could lead? I’ll have to give it some thought…
Superman loves grandma’s wholegrain muffins and waffles, and he loves to help her make them. I think it is a way she feels like she can help now, and they enjoy the time when he helps her. He would scarf all 16 muffins in 2 days if he got the chance! :)
Something you might consider with this arrangement… It is great that your mom turns to you about the food. However, if she is a partner with you in your food choices for Superman then she won’t need to ask you. By asking you if Superman can have something or sending Superman to you, you then become the “gatekeeper”, the “bad guy” around food for both Superman AND your mother. Maybe setting up food ahead of time with your mom would work… I’m not sure what would work for you. It just seems like there is a disempowering element in your current arrangement.
True, thanks!
Where is everybody else today? I am lazy today. Drove 30 min. each way to buy coconuts from the Asian Market. That is the name of it – Asian Market! :) Then I opened a couple & drank them, made cocoa, took Superman to school, and sat here on my butt staring at the computer screen, telling people to eat my chocolate ice cream and asking you all to tell me how to raise my son! And I’m loving it! :) heeheeheeheeheeheeheehee…
hum… (more burning smell?) Another thought… maybe we are selling short Superman’s part in this and his ability to choose… he has a part in this also. Is your point that Superman eats “raw” or that he gets what he needs to be healthy? From that perspective, maybe options will open to you where he in incorporated choosing process so that it doesn’t matter who offers what, he will make good choices for himself. hum…
Enjoy your “butt warming” day. :)
Kind of similar situation for me. One of my patients (older-70 or so) has invited my husband and I to dinner. i have seen her for many years, she knows i am raw. We have regular discussions about our books, etc. yet she is a Gourmet and is used to impressing others with her cooking. Usually when I go to a friends’ house for dinner, i bring a large yummy salad w/ my own dressing. She won’t hear of it and I have insulted her by suggesting it—She’s come up with Scallop ceviche in vodka. Though i do occasionally enjoy a vodka (distilled from grapes, not grain) drink, I cannot eat raw scallops. I have told her every time she asks that I don’t eat raw fish—so i can’t figure where the misunderstanding came from. I really don’t want to be a bother—I know I’m high maintenance, which is exactly why I just bring—to me it’s so simple, yet to this generation, I am insulting her by not eating her food. We have a very open and honest relationship so i know i could possibly pursuade her to let me bring the salad. I’m rambling…again.
Om-Hiney! I just read about the rumpus—an encapsulated hematoma? Are they going to drain it? Can you sit? Raised or flat? Is the pressure killing you? A good PT could probably get in there and break it up with ultrasound, but if you’ve already iced this thing until it’s frozen and you can’t tolerate the pressure, it’s quicker to have it drained—just follow-up with arnica around the suture line (not on it) and vit E over the suture line. You could also use a diluted GSE solution as an anti-bacterial on the surgical wound. I could tell you a childbirth story about a huge encapsulated hematoma in a not good area…had it drained (general anaesthsia, though). there are always risks.
Izhpt~ Maddening isn’t it? Do you think she would be open to making something “gourmet” (and challenging) out of a book like Raw Food/Raw World or from Russell James or another “gourmety” chef? Something a little more intricate than a crudite tray that she might think is the only thang available in the “raw world.” Part of her thang might be the flash/wow factor and that she has made a huge effort in the kitchen for you.
Holy cow! I just drank my fourth and fifth coconuts for today! Yesterday I didn’t have any left, and I kept thinking of them all day. It seems that my body just wants young coconuts, greens, and chocolate! I finished up my salad greens last night. Today I have been drinking young coconuts and cocoa, and now I’m going to pick up Superman from school and then go buy more greens! :) Wheeeeeeeee! This feels good!!!
