1 1/2 cups walnuts

1 1/2 cups pecans

1 1/2 cups dates

1 1/2 cup raisins

6 tablespoons raw cocoa powder

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions

1. In a food processor, process nuts until they are very well blended, so that they look like a chunky flour. Basically, you should just see little chunky bits of nuts.

2. Then, add everything else to the food processor and continue blending. You'll probably want to add the ingredients one at a time otherwise your food processor might get all munged up.

3. Keep on blending until your mixture looks like a big ball of dough, like you can see in the picture. There shouldn't be big chunks of anything. You will probably see small flecks of nuts though.

As you can see, this recipe makes a lot of cake. You may want to halve this raw chocolate cake recipe if you have a small family.

Once you've got a giant raw chocolate cake dough ball, then the fun begins. You do not need to dehydrate this or anything, the cake is basically done now you just need to figure out the presentation (shape and icing or whatever you want).

5. Just press the dough into the desired shape for whatever you want to make. For example, just take a nice cake plate and press the dough into a cake shape. Ice it using your favourite icing, like in the picture above.

You could also split the dough in half and press half of it into a cake shape, add some fruit or icing or whatever on top of the first half, then put the remainder of the raw chocolate cake recipe on top to make a layer cake effect.

I think of this recipe as my base for being creative. I'll make up a batch of this raw chocolate cake recipe and then get creative by layering it with fruit, making cookies, or doing whatever I feel like.

This recipe does not have to be dehydrated. Just use your food processor and it's ready to go.

If you're looking for something sweet but don't want something as time consuming to make, try raw chocolate truffles instead. They taste rather similar.

I just discovered your website and made the chocolate cake last night and absolutely loved it! My husband and I are vegan and starting to incorporate more raw recipes in our diet and this one is great! I plan to try the lemon bars next. So nice to have a dessert that's not filled with processed sugars and other things I can't pronounce!

Hello there from the west country England! Loving your fabulous site and half way through making this delectable cake as going to a pot luck tomorrow but Im so frustrated, as my mind numbingly expensive vitamix blender keeps overheating! I thought this expensive piece of kit would handle anything I threw at it. Should I add water? I did a little but that doesnt seem to be solving the issue completely. Sofar I'm scooping out larger bits to blend and then suppose I'll have to do the final bit by hand at the end...OR am I making some obvious mistake? Please share any pearls of wisdom re my blender or my technique? Thank you :)

wowee zowee! Adding water was not a great idea! Ho ho well I dont think anyone at the potluck has had much raw food before so I think Ill get away with it :) It still tastes amazing just has the consistency of concrete! Ah well I have learned something new and still have a gorgeous cake to show off with, assuming I can put it together still....

Hi Jojo, Vitamix is awesome, but it is not the right piece of equipment for this recipe! You MUST use a food processor. A blender will not do!

Blender (vitamix) is for liquidy, wet stuff (soup, sauce, smoothie)

Food processor is for dryer stuff (cake)

That was an amazing cake! I love it and it's so simple to make.
Unfortunately my food processor didn't like it that much at all, so that is broken and that is why I have 1 question left.
Can you recommend me a good food processor which can handle all kinds of nuts... and... dates :-)

Hi!! I just made this chocolate cake and i halved the quantities so as to make mini cakes and when i mixed all the ingredients together and then pressed it into the cake tin, some kind of oil is oozing out of the cake! Is that normal? Did i do something wrong? It takes very rich and delicious i'm just a bit considered of what the oil like substance is!!

Hi Gilly, it's the oil in the nuts :) You probably spun them in the food processor for a bit too long... and released the oils :) Not bad for you or anything, just a bit oilier than you would have liked, as you discovered :)
