Ingredients
- 1 medium avocado (ripe and at peak of perfection please!)
- 1/2 cup dates
- 2 1/2 tablespoons raw cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup water + 1/8 cup water
- 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
- 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
Recipe Directions
- 1. Throw these raw chocolate avocado pudding ingredients into a high-speed blender. Start blending on slow and then crank up the blending speed to high.
- 2. Blend this sucker until puddingy and gooooood! You might need to start and stop this a few times to get it to blend properly because the dates will require more blending than pudding recipes that don't contain dates. If you have a good blender (AKA Vitamix or Blendtec) then you should be able to get this super smooth.
- 3. You may need to add a tiny bit of extra water to facilitate blending. But if doing so only add TINY bits at a time! Try not to add extra water or it'll end up watering it down and changing the consistency.
The Rawtarian's Thoughts
By The Rawtarian Most raw chocolate avocado puddings do not contain dates. Rather, instead they include a lot more agave nectar or raw honey to get the pudding to sweeten up. However, I don't like to use too much honey in this one, so instead in this raw chocolate avocado pudding recipe I call for dates and just a bit of honey.
I recommend soaking your dates first in a warm water for an hour or so so that they are soft and easier to blend, especially If you do not have a high-speed blender.
Although you can eat this chocolate pudding right away, I find that this raw pudding tastes best when chilled in the fridge for at least a few hours.
This is a small recipe that makes four small servings. Feel free to double if you'd like more. And more choco puddding is always a good thing!

What I wanted to ask-before my laptop went rogue on me-is can I use raw carob rather than cocoa?
The Rawtarian

RawkingD, Darn rogue laptops! I have a rogue vaccuum - it just sits there even though I know I should be using it lol!
Re: carob, yes, but since carob has a weaker flavor, I'd add a bit more carob than cocoa. Perhaps just under 4 tbsps of carob in this recipe.
Hope this helps!

Hi Debra, the dates are necessary both for sweetness and texture

Thank you I actually did try it without dates and my fiance was a bit weirded out but it was still yummy. The dates would probably make it better though haha.

I agree, it would probably be better with dates. You'll have to make something raw and extra delicious for your fiance next time ;) Glad you still thought it was okay though!

Dear Laura-Jane,
Thanks for this great recipe. Our 3 year old daughter is fighting leukemia, and I can feed this to her and sneak in some superfoods. Usually, it's really hard to get anything healthy in her. So, Mom wins, kid wins!

I'm allergic to nuts but can have seeds and soy nuts; is it possible to use soy nuts or seeds in this and other recipes?
The Rawtarian

I do not cook with soy nuts.
Sunflower or pumpkin seeds can be substituted for many nuts - but not for cashews or macadamia nuts. However, every recipe is different so it's best to find out about substitutions per recipe.

To me this looks like the best liver tonic money can buy and here's why.....Avocado Protects Against Liver Damage
Avocado (Persea americana) may help to protect the liver from damage, according to new research from Japan.
* Researchers fed avocado and 22 other fruits to laboratory rats.
* The rats were then given D-galactosamine, a substance that causes liver damage by interfering with cell synthesis and results in cell death.
* The rats fed the avocado obtained the least amount of liver damage.
The Researchers discovered three new compounds that might explain why the avocado is protective.
"Besides offering taste and nutrition, avocados seem to improve liver health," said Hirokazu Kawagishi, professor of applied biological chemistry, at Shizuoka University. "I have begun eating avocados more myself, because of this study." He advocated that people should try to eat an avocado a day.
Dark chocolate reduces damage to the blood vessels in patients who have suffered scarring on the liver due to excessive drinking or disease, new studies have found.
It also reduces blood pressure in the liver as it contains high levels of anti-oxidants which mop of damaging particles from the body.
I look at all your recipes from a healing perspective I think you're a food magician .

My 6 year old can't get enough of this stuff! It's become a staple in our house. We usually throw some blueberries or strawberries on top. I'm pretty sure time stands still whenever I'm eating this stuff.
I used to make a similar recipe with Agave. I like that this recipe uses dates. It makes my body much happier!

This was really yummy. I used the water that the dates had soaked in to give it extra sweetness. Something that tastes this good shouldn't be good for you! Agree with the recommendation to let it sit in the fridge. I thought I could taste a bit of the avocado when I tried it right after it was made, but after it sat I couldn't taste the avacado anymore.

I tried making a chocolate "mousse" one time with similar ingredients - minus the dates - and it didn't come out that good. I think the soaked dates might be the key to the creaminess and sweetness, so I'll be sure to give it a second try using your recipe sometime. :)
