Raw apple pie recipe

Yield
8 slices
Crust ingredients:
- 1 cup cashews
- 1 cup dried, unsweetened coconut
- 1/2 cup dates
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Apple pie ingredients:
- 3 medium apples
- 1 cup dates
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
Recipe Directions
- 1. Place all crust ingredients in the food processor. Process until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed.
- 2. Dump crust mixture into your pie crust/glass dish. Press the crust down firmly in your dish with your hands. (Crust is now done.)
- 3. Roughly chop two apples, get rid of core/seeds. (Leave one apple alone, OK?)
- 4. Place all filling ingredients (EXCEPT THAT ONE APPLE, LEAVE ONE APPLE ALONE) in the food processor. Process until it's well mixed - a wettish mixture with a few small date chunks or apple peel that might not disappear. (You might have to pause and scrape the sides and then process again.)
- 5. Throw wet appley-mixture into a big bowl.
- 6. Slice the last apple into thin slices or small chunks. Throw these apple slices/chunks into the wet appley mixture. Stir gently.
- 7. Dump appley-mixture (wet + sliced apples) on top of crust. Smooth out with spoon.
- 8. Cover and throw in freezer. Ready in half-an-hour!
- 9. This raw apple pie recipe should always be kept in the freezer. (It'll get soggy if in the fridge.)
The Rawtarian's Thoughts

This is how it works: Just make the crust, press it down into a pan. Then process most of the raw apple pie filling, then slice the remaining apple. Stir together the appley-mixture and the sliced apple. Dump the appley-stuff on top of the crust, spread it out. Cover and throw this raw apple pie recipe in the freezer.
The presentation is "okay" and not something that I would serve to impress a stranger or my boss, but it's great for a family dessert that tastes great and satisfies that craving for apple pie - raw style!
When inventing this raw apple pie recipe, I used Granny Smith crisp green apples. You can use whatever medium/largish apples you have on hand. I do NOT peel any of the apples, don't bother.
Your easy raw apple pie will keep in the freezer for about a week.
Tip: Make the crust first and then the filling right after. (This way you don't have to wash the food processor twice!)
Tip: For the crust, if you don't have cashews you could use pecans (or walnuts) instead for the crust. (But cashews have the most neutral flavour.)
Tip: If you want to get fancy with your apple pie, you could top it with this yummy raw whipped cream recipe. (But I rarely do 'cause I'm not that fancy.)
Tip: You can stir 1 tbsp raisins into the wet appley-mixture like I did in the photo above :)

Hi Sara!
So glad you enjoyed :) Maybe next time have the apple chunks a bit smaller - then they won't need to thaw for as long

I made the cranberry relish recipe, but it turned out a little dry, because I used dried cranberries instead of fresh. I have now used this mixture in the apple pie crust, instead of the dates, absolutely delicious!

Raw apple pie recipe
This apple pie was a big hit with our family! Everyone loved it! Especially my mom, who has a bit of an unhealthy affinity for sweets and pies.. she couldn't believe it was raw - said it had a delicious "cooked" flavor.. Making this again tonight!

Wow! I made the apple pie last night. It was a big hit with my husband. We are currently in South Korea for work. We have found your recipes a lifesaver to add depth to our meals. I did not have any dates so I use half raisins and half prunes. It tasted amazing.

Cheers. I just used a combo of nuts. It turned out fine but I really missed the coconut crunch so I made another one. ;D
P.S My 6m.o girl took an interest in dessert tonight so I offered her some. She loved it & was set to eat all my filling! The dates mean this =the sweetest thing she's eaten but I love that she can eat health with us.

Raw apple pie recipe
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your stuff Laura-Jane. Your recipes are truly EXCELLENT. I'm a whip-it-up-now kinda cook so your style and limited ingredient lists work for my [sneakily becoming Raw] pantry and me. I made my first apple pie to redeem myself after daring to venture to someone elses' strawberry cheesecake for a dinner party that I considered a dessert failure. :( Sheesh! Should have stuck to yours! My hubby is loving our Raw Dessert Freezer and we've just finished eating two of these pies in a row. I want to make this for someone who doesn't eat coconut. What could I sub? Almond meal? More nuts? I see you've suggested hemp seed hearts in other recipes but am not sure how readily I can access them...

Yay for sneakily becoming raw!! :)
Hmm a sub for coconut in this base... I would have to say hempseed hearts... or maybe more cashews... or maybe almond meal as you suggested, or perhaps even a combo of all of those things...
hope that helps, Renae!

I made this pie with peaches instead of apples and it was great also! I put a little less cinnamon. Today I just made it with apples and am bringing it to a dinner tonight. It took less than 30 min to prepare. As I was making it I was thinking why isn't this kind of pie more popular? :)

Raw apple pie recipe
I have been making your recipes for about six months...love! Suggestions, as I am finishing my last piece of apple pie: I peeled the last apple and added the diced pieces to the food processor with the appley mush mixture and pulsed so I would not dirty an additional bowl and I let it thaw a bit after I cut it to get a creamy, not icy texture and brings out the cinnamon flavor. Thank you so much for your creativity, it really keeps me on track!

Raw apple pie recipe
I recently made a raw apple pie similar to your recipe. I was curious how homemade dehydrated apple slices and regular apple slices in the filling and top layer would work. It took more time and advance planning but it was good.

Hi Sam,
Thanks for your note. I think the dehydrated apples would work fine, but, as you say, would take a bit more time. My fave recipes require little advanced planning as I am lazy and disorganized at heart!
