The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

Raw pie crusts are an integral part of your raw recipe arsenal!

I just love this raw pie crust recipe. I mean, four ingredients and the taste of this raw pie crust is to die live for! I wouldn't change a thing about this one. The flavors and measurements are perfect, IMO.

This raw pie crust recipe is my go-to, standby raw pie crust. I like this recipe even better than carob or cacoa crusts. I have heard some people call this recipe a "shortbread" recipe, and this one raw pie crust recipe does remind me of shortbread... that salty sweetness takes me back to my childhood!

It is so simple and you can whip it up in a flash with some pretty basic ingredients. It also presses down very easily into a pie plate.

This recipe makes enough for one pie crust. You can top this crust with anything you like. I prefer topping this raw pie crust with thawed rasberries and other wet berries. I often keep the crust on its own, and I don't top it until we're ready to eat it to avoid the crust getting soggy. (I hate soggy pie crusts!!)

Made a strawberry pie (not raw). Had to use dried, soaked figs - couldn't find any dates in Portugal. But worked well! Absolutely delicious recipe. Thank you!

Can i change the nut to a seed (sunflower) ? I want to make it for a function but there is a no-nut policy :(

Hi Kahontiyo, sunflower seeds would probably work okay, but pumpkin seeds would be better because they are a bit oilier and a bit more similar to walnuts. A combo of both would be fine too. Good luck!

Sounds easy. What can I use as a substitute for the coconut? Is it.necessary? I live in a country where things not readily available. I am a newbie at eating raw and vegan. Thanks

Hi Bia! The coconut is necessary because there are so few ingredients in this recipe. Without it, there wouldn't be much!

There are some more pie recipes here though! https://www.therawtarian.com/raw-pies-and-crumbles

What a relief!! I don't know how many times I've tried a recipe online or from a cookbook & was disappointed in the results...This crust is all that!! I feel like I need to pay you or give you something in return for such a great recipe..I didn't have shredded coconut so I used coconut flour instead.. delicious!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm so glad that the recipe turned out well for you :) What did you use inside the pie crust?

I made a raw vegan almond cinnamon blackberry "cheese cake". I'm new to the raw vegan world so I free-styled a few ingredients with that recipe, it turned out pretty good, my 3yr old & husband gave it 2 thumbs up...I made enough crust for two cakes so I'm trying your cheese cake recipe with that one;)

Can this crust be baked if the filling requires baking?

Sure! It won't change too much if baked at a reasonable temperature (350ish) - it might brown a little on the bottom, but it should be fine.

I wanted to ask before making this crust, will cashews work ok instead of walnuts? I just like to use what I have on hand :).

Yes, cashews will definitely work instead of walnuts in the crust. So will pecans and sunflower seeds.

Hope this helps, Tristi!

Hi Niki,

You can use hempseed hearts instead of the coconut in this recipe!

I am so new to this lifestyle! Altering trying it for 4 months and then crashing with the traditional American diet, I knew I had to get back to RAW! I feel so much better with a raw lifestyle and it drops weight like no other! I wanted to know what advice you have for we newbies and is there an easy way to constantly thinking out of the box? My head swarms with information that I have read here and at Dr. Fuhrman's website, that I am in a spin. How do you sort it out, keep simple and truly live the raw lifestyle?

Hi Froggie, congrats on making the change! The first thing I'll say to you is to go easy on yourself. If you crash one day, then dust yourself off and keep on trying!

This is great thank you! I just used it as the base for a vegan caramel slice and am impressed. Just added some water to improve the consistency. I've saved your recipe for future use. Appreciate your generosity in sharing it.

This crust, combined with Jennifer Cornbleet's raw chocolate mousse, is absolutely incredible! I was to attend a family function and mentioned I may bring a raw recipe and everyone objected. I made it anyway and told everyone, my very young niece and nephew included, that it was "chocolate pie" and it was a hit. It was after the dessert was completely gone that I let everyone in on the secret!

I have been intimidated by raw pies for a long time but love how easy this is. I also used a blender instead of a food processor and it seemed to work just fine! Thanks - love your site :)

Just made this crust and it came together so easily and nicely! My dates were a bit dry so I soaked them just breifly before processing, and added a couple tablespoons of water to the mixture as they were churning. The crust turned out great, was easy to work with and very tasty. Thanks for such a straight forward recipe! I also appreciate how theres only 4 ingredients to it lol.
