Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups quick oats (pre-cooked)
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 apple
- 1 tablespoon raisins
Recipe Directions
- 1. OPTIONAL TO SOFTEN: The night before, throw the water, raisins and then oats into your blender. Let them sit overnight.
- 2. In the morning, start your blender (and if you didn't soak the night before, throw the water, raisins and then the oats into your blender). While the water and oats are blending, chop the apple and then add it to the blender, too.
- 3. Continue blending until the oatmeal is a nice, smooth texture.
- 4. Eat! I love to top this oatmeal with more whole raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon. This recipe makes for a very filling breakfast.
The Rawtarian's Thoughts

In the morning, my breakfast is almost always either fresh fruit, a green smoothie, or--my favourite--quick, blended oatmeal.
This recipe does take a bit of preparation because it should be soaked overnight, but, with only a few ingredients, it's so easy! (PS: You can do it without soaking but it won't be as smooth.)
Of course, like any good oatmeal, top this recipe with fruit or whatever suits your fancy!
PS: It has recently come to my attention that eating truly uncooked oats is not safe. Thus, I have modified this recipe to use quick rolled oats, which have been cooked but are way better for your digestive system. Truly raw (uncooked) oats are very tough on the digestive system and should not be eaten because of their high amount of phytic acid.

Excuse my ignorance but what are steel cut oats? Can they be bought in the supermarket or just in health food stores? Are you based in Australia?

Hi Rachael, I live in Canada. Here they can be purchased in the grocery store (or at health food stores) near the oatmeal and cooked cereal area.
Can any other Australians weigh in on this? Do they have a different name in Australia?

I have just seen these comments/questions. I am in Australia too. Oat Groats, including steel cut oats, I have found only in health food shops, including one at Victoria Market in Melbourne (which sells the freshest I think). Organic rolled unstabilised oats are sold at Safeway/Woolworths supermarkets in their cereal section, & are reasonably priced. I believe these are "raw". If Rachel & others want more details I am happy to help.

Please be careful in advocating raw oatmeal. It is high in phytic acid. I got grave's because of this.

Hi Rosey,
Thanks for your note. I will investigate this further.
I have found that eating raw quick oats (uncooked, even when soaked overnight) they give me indigestion, which I never normally get, so I don't like to eat raw quick oats.
I will investigate more re: steel cut oats. Thanks Rosey <3

Can you use quaker oatmeal?

Not raw Ozam - but the recipe might still work if you don't mind that it's not raw

A blender isn't always an option (I spend part of the year living on a sailboat where space and battery power are precious). Plus a blender is just one more thing to clean.
So I use this very simple method in the evening: mix oats with some crushed walnuts, mixed berries, raisins, chopped apple, etc. into a big coffee mug, add soy milk till it reaches the level of the dry ingredients, and go to bed.
In the morning, get a spoon and eat.
Washing up involves a mug and a spoon.

Hi George, what kind of oats do you use? Could be really nice with steel cut oats and almond or another nut milk for a raw alternative. Nice tip! And sailboat living sounds fun.

Steel-cut organic from a local mill with plain, unsweetened soy since it's usually easy to source in smaller communities where more 'exotic' options aren't available.
Living aboard is fun when the weather's good.

I had this for breakfast yesterday and I really liked it! I used the oat groats I had & we happened to have both raisins & apples. I can't wait to try different fruits & add different nuts to it. This will definitely be a breakfast staple for me. Thank you so much! I'm very anxious to try the brownies too. I work with an older gentleman who likes to eat very healthy. I told him about the brownies & he gave me $20 to go buy the ingredients to make some for him & and wife and for me & my family. :)

Try this...if something gets you up a couple hours before regular time, add walnuts on the top of the soaked oats, and just enough water to cover the walnuts. Go back to bed. Get up and proceed as previous. Wow is that good!

This is really good! The texture is so appealing. I *hate* the gummy texture of cooked oats, and wanted a way to eat oats other than in sweets. This is it!
