Ingredients
- 1 cup cashews (soaked and rinsed)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Recipe Directions
- Directions to make this raw sour cream recipe:
- 1. If you are wise and patient, soak your cashews first and then rinse them before blending. If you are impatient and have a high-speed blender, just throw dry cashews in your blender.
- 2. Add all ingredients, including cashews, into your blender.
- 3. Blend until smooth.
- 4. Transfer to a bowl and then chill in fridge for at least 2 hours.
- 5. Enjoy on raw vegan tacos or as a dip!

Big thanks to Ashlyn for sending this recipe my way. It's totally my style (simple, quick and delicious) and a great excuse to make this raw vegan taco meat recipe, which I hadn't had for ages. Because to me tacos and sour cream go hand in hand, don't you think!
This is super quick to prepare. Best made in a high-speed blender, of course.

Raw sour cream recipe
I can't believe how yummy this is. I have tried to cut out all dairy except my homemade kefir. I love sour cream so giving that up was hard but this definitely makes up for it. I am now looking for something to make so I can put this on !!! Thanks for the recipe. I really enjoy reading your recipes and am excited to try some.

I am not able to eat cashews (sesame seeds or peanuts) and I have noticed there are a lot of recipes that call for cashews. Do you know of any substitutes for cashews? I love your site and the great info you share. I find that your recipes are the only ones I look for when I am searching for something good to eat. I am new to raw and you have been so helpful! I originally thought I could not be 100% raw but after hearing what you have to say I think it may be do-able!

I totally failed at this one ? I finally bought cashews but the store only had roasted unsalted. I hope I can still make all the recipes with cashews! You think it will mess up the flavor in recipes?
With this one, I didn’t soak them and don’t have a super expensive blender. It would only pulse once before needing to be pushed down... over and over... never getting blended.
My blender CAN get things really creamy. I’m thinking it was too little of an amount. If I make a larger batch it may work... scared to waste though ?
Soooo if you don’t have a VitaMix or similar I’d def soak and make a bigger batch

I. Cannot. Stop. Eating. It. Real sour cream is nothing compared to this living food "sour cream". I thank God I've found this recipe everytime I taste it. I've made this with raw cashews and roasted cashews before. I prefer raw cashew nuts but when I can't afford it, I will use roasted and it still tastes so gooood!

Bummer - it's true that roasted cashews have a stronger flavor... So not ideal for any of my recipes, sadly! I'd save those to munch on as snacks and try to get unroasted/unsalted - unroasted is definitely necessary to get the creamy texture and blank flavor :) xoxox

This sour cream with the raw taco salad is amazing. ? Even the meat eating husband preferred this to the beef I used to make for him. Both him and my two year old couldn't get enough. Thank you for having recipes that I can make for the entire family so I'm not having to make multiple meals!

You can use it in normal tacos, on a Mexicanish salad, etc etc. Soo good. Especially combined with good stuff like lettuce, fresh corn, fresh tomatoes, cilantro etc etc. Yah!

Raw sour cream recipe
This is unbelievably awesome! I added 1/4 teaspoon of salt (instead of 1/2) and 1/2 teaspoon of salt (instead of 3/4) to get just a little bit more subtle taste. And this stuff rocks, really!

The best sour cream ever! It's smooth when the cashews are soaked for a bit (I soaked for only an hour and the consistency was marvelous.)
My favorite lunch is raw vegan tacos and this was the missing piece that put it all together! Thank you so much!

I just joined and cannot find the comment button. How can I make the sour cream and mayonaise last longer. I only make food for myself and these batches would not get consumed in a week.

Good question!
Freeze half of it right away – eat the fresh half right away, then defrost frozen batch in fridge when you want to eat it.
