Yield
1 large smoothie
Ingredients
- 2 bananas (peeled)
- 2 medium oranges (peeled - use a knife, cut generously around the edges to remove a lot of the white rind as well as the skin)
- 1 apple (chopped)
- 1 cup spinach (or more)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)
Recipe Directions
- 1. Add all ingredients to blender. Place soft ingredients like bananas in first, because that's what I was taught!
- 2. Blend in your high-speed blender until nicely smooth.
- 3. Your green smoothie is ready! Pour green smoothie into cup(s) or a large mason jar for on-the-go goodness.
The Rawtarian's Thoughts
By The Rawtarian I have been a raw vegan for over two four years. And for breakfast almost every single day I have a green smoothie. And I am still not sick of them yet, if you can believe that! I can make them super quickly, and I always keep the main ingredients on hand.
If you have any trust in me believe me when I tell you that in order to make a tasty green smoothie you absolutely must have a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or a Blendtec. Otherwise it'll be chunky and grainy and downright disgusting and you'll have to pinch your nose to get it down. When it comes to green smoothies texture is everything and high-speed blenders are going to take a slightly disgusting chunky mixture and turn it into a silky smoothie like the one in this photo that actually tastes delicious--like a treat. Texture is everything when it comes to this green smoothie recipe.
This may not be the most exciting green smoothie recipe in the world, but it's what I have for breakfast almost every morning so I figured that you'd like to know what I have for breaky! What I like about it as well is that it's not too expensive, since bananas are inexpensive here in Canada.
To clean your blender: Add 1-2 cups of water into your blender immediately and blend again to aid in cleaning process. Take carafe to sink and finish rinsing/cleaning blender right away. I am not a good housekeeper but the one rule in my house is to NEVER let the Vitamix carafe sit uncleaned. NEVER! Why? Because then if I'm lazy later on and it's not clean then I won't use it, then I won't know what to make, and I'll just eat nuts for dinner because I'm too lazy to clean the blender. NEVER store recipes in your blender for this reason. :)
This recipe makes quite a large green smoothie, it's a perfect breakfast for 1 person. This is my go-to breakfast.

So... I accidentally bought arugula instead of spinach... Silly me!! I didn't even think to look as I was putting it in. I'll be more careful next time I go grocery shopping I think! :S

Happens to the best of us! You can still use the arugula, but it will taste a bit "greener" than the spinach - so just cut down a bit on the arugula (ie. use a bit less than called for)

Hi Gul,
"Cups" are the American way of measuring ingredients in cooking. You should be able to easily convert cups to your system of measuring using an online calculator. Hope this helps!

Hi Kyle, give it a shot! You might want to omit the orange though. Maybe substitute with a peach, it'll be easier for your blender to blend.

I had this for breakfast today and my $250nz 1000w breville blender made it nice and smooth:) Just made sure I did not blend for more then 1minute at a time to avoid oxidation. Thanks so much for this it's yummy. Just got to get my head around drinking a litre of smoothie at a time. (just starting out with raw food)

Re Anne's comment about the nutribullet - it is amazing! Super easy to clean and easy to travel with, and most importantly, it blends things SMOOTH! It's almost as good as the vitamix in that respect. It's much better at blending kale and parsley than my big blender. It goes on sale at canadian tire for $80 if you watch for it.

Made something similar to this today - going to try your ratios. Sounds good - cinnamon is an interesting addition. Do you add it for the taste or the health benefits?

I have been lurking on this site for weeks and this will be my first post. I buy green smoothies all the time so to be able to make one was very gratifying!!! It was delicious and REALLY I will definitely make this again. I did not have chia seeds and used bottled lemon juice and it was still wonderful. My only question is whether or not this can be made ahead and stored for a day or two?

Hi Evita! Great to hear from you :) It's a great question. I am not a huge fan of green smoothies that have been made in advance - they just don't taste the same! It can be a nice idea to get all your ingredients ready the night before (chopped and ready to go inside your blender - but not actually blended yet). Then you could just blend real quick in the morning. :)
