Raw brownie recipe

Shelf Life
5 days in fridge -
Yield
1 dish brownies
Ingredients
- 1 cup pecans (you can use walnuts in a pinch, but pecans are much better!)
- 1 cup dates
- 5 tablespoons raw cacao (cocoa) powder
- 4 tablespoons shredded unsweetened coconut
- 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Recipe Directions
- 1. Place pecans alone in your food processor and process until the pecans become small and crumbly.
- 2. Add dates to the raw brownie recipe and process again until the mixture sticks together and the dates are well processed.
- 3. Add the remaining ingredients to this raw brownie recipe and process again until the mixture turns a lovely dark chocolatey brown. Stop processing before it gets too buttery. (There should still be air between the small bits so that you will be able to press them down into your brownie pan.)
- 4. Dump the mixture into a brownie dish or small cake pan and press down firmly using your clean hands.
- 5. Refrigerate this raw brownie recipe for a couple of hours. You do not have to refrigerate it, but it is much easier to slice when chilled. By the way, this is actually a raw brownie recipe that keeps its shape! So it can be good for serving to non-raw fooders because the presentation of this raw brownie recipe is good when chilled.
- 6. Store this raw brownie recipe in the refrigerator if it lasts that long!
- PS: For an even more delightful brownie, serve it with this easy, instant raw chocolate icing.
The Rawtarian's Thoughts

Raw brownie recipe -- finally, a raw brownie recipe that tastes like REAL BROWNIES!
I am quite surprised and amazed at how the texture of this raw brownie recipe resembles real brownies--especially after this raw brownie recipe is refrigerated for about an hour or even longer.
My husband thinks this raw brownie recipe needs chocolate icing, but I disagree. I think it's perfect on its own! (But it is true, everything is better with raw chocolate icing on it.)
You can also use this raw brownie recipe as a pie crust or as very chocolately raw truffles.
Good luck trying to keep this raw brownie recipe around for longer than 24 hours. This vegan recipe would be good for about eight small servings. Feel free to double the recipe if you want more or if you want to make it last longer. (I usually double it.)
Advanced optional tip: Throw 1 tablespoon cacao nibs into the mixture after processing and before squishing into pan for fun crunchy texture!

YUMMO!! I made this yesterday with Brazil nuts as that is all that I had in the pantry and I just couldn't wait a whole day to buy Pecans and try this once I saw it!!! And I must say - it is very good, had wonderful feedback from friends and 8yr old and 6yr old were totally won over... imagine if I'd actually had Pecans! Well I bought some today, so when the current batch gets low, I'm ready to go on the next one! THANK YOU!

I would love to make these but my son is highly allergic to nuts. I find many raw recipes use nuts as well. Is there an alternative that I can use that will give the same effect? These brownies look awwwwesome !!

Hi Alisha, that is difficult because many of my raw recipes do include nuts (although I do have some nut-free recipe categories):

If your son can eat seeds (sunflower seeds, etc.) you can use sunflower seeds or pumpkins seeds in many recipes that call for pecans or almonds. (There is no good substitute for cashews or macadamia nuts though.)

I just mixed up my first batch and tasted the mix before refrigerating. I don't see these brownies lasting beyond tomorrow! Delish!!!

Hi Tamiko,
So glad they turned out well for you! They don't last long in my house, either :)

Your recipes all sound great but I am allergic to coconut (which is included in a lot of raw food recipes everywhere!) What is a good sub for coconut or coconut oil when making raw food? I have been told another fat can be subbed for the oil but I think this would only work for baking. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Hi Danielle,
1. There is no substitute for coconut oil in raw recipes.
2. For dried shredded coconut, you can use hempseed hearts instead in most recipes. (In this recipe, you can use hempseed hearts or just omit the coconut altogether.)

The brownies are very good. I'm so glad I found you, because my first attempt at raw food was Raw Food, Real World, and it was so time consuming. Also, some of the ingredients were hard to find. It's more for experienced gourmet raw cooks, and I kind of gave up on raw food until I found you. The simplicity of your recipes and the availability of your ingredients is wonderful! I'm going to make everything! Thank you so much!

I just made it. I used soaked and drained pecans, (because I keep them in the fridge all the time). I used carob instead of cacao and I added 2 teaspoons of chia seeds. I made them into little balls since my second generation children prefer to pop small treats into their mouth on the go. The second batch I did with cacao powder and cacao nibs. TOTAL success among grownups. 2nd generation ehh, 50/50. I loved it. Will try next time with a different nut!

Oh. My. Gosh! I made the brownies and the raw carrot cake to take to a party on the weekend, and they were the talk of the party! Way better cold, and SO rich! After tasting a bit while I was making them just to make sure they were coming along well, I was wowed by them. I think you made some converts at the party, too. All of your recipes are simple, easy and super tasty. I am so glad I found your site. Thank you SO much for all of your hard work!

You are The Rawetarian Goddess!!!! I just made a double batch of raw chocolate brownies with raw chocolate icing, and I am in heaven! For Lent this year,I gave up sugar (probably a good thing), and tonight, scraping the sides of my vitamix to get every last morsel of icing - ooh, heaven - I know I can do without that horrible white stuff. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I should have read the comments before making the brownies. I'm just starting to look into raw diet. Even with the ingredients I used it was edible but bit too sweet. My first problem was that I could not find unsweetened coconut flakes, fresh dates or raw chocolate so after visiting 5 stores I gave up and used what they had. I have to find a healthier grocery store or maybe an ethnic store would carry fresh figs. I can almost imagine them tasting divine and since I am a stubbornly determined person I am going to make them again. Thanks, K.

I too couldnt find the unsweetened coconut so I ordered in at amazon. I love it and use it so much. I found dates right with the bananas.

Mar 30, 2013
Hi Krystina, it depends where you are, but the coconut can be found near the nuts in your grocery store. Fresh dates are generally found in the produce aisle, or in a pinch you can use the baking dates that have been heated. They are also near the nuts in your grocery store's baking aisle.
Also, instead of raw cacao you can use basic cocoa powder instead. It's not raw but it will work in a pinch.

I think the "well done" should go back to you, seeing as how you are doing a fab job at creating meals that even a 5yo enjoys :) Way to go!
