Recipe Directions

  • 1. Put chia seeds in bowl. Add water. Stir thoroughly RIGHT AWAY otherwise it'll clump up.
  • 2. Add honey and coconut and mix more with your spoon. Chia seeds will absorb a lot of water really fast and thicken up.
  • 3. Add anything else you want, like 1/2 tablespoon pumpkin seeds, a few almonds, 1/2 tablespoon sunflower seeds etc. Just for taste and to give it some excitement.
  • 4. By now your raw chia porridge should be pretty thick.
  • 5. For extra pleasure, top your raw porridge with cashew milk and fresh or thawed blueberries.

The Rawtarian's Thoughts

By The Rawtarian

Raw porridge is a perfect way to start your morning! It's great because it's super quick - think 4 minutes or less.

Most mornings I'll start my day with a silky green smoothie. However, if I'm in the mood for a litte more excitement I'll perhaps have raw cereal, raw oatmeal or raw porridge :)

I like to keep both whole chia seeds and milled chia seeds on hand. I use milled chia seeds in this recipe, but in many of my raw chia puddings I use whole chia seed.

PS:  You can use either whole chia seeds or milled chia seeds. Milled is best but whole will do. "Milled" just means ground. If you have a clean coffee grinder that you use for nut and seed grinding you can mill your own.  But you can buy pre-milled chia seeds too. If you can only have one type on hand I'd go for whole chia seeds.

Enjoy your raw porridge for breakfast and let me know what you think!

Hi  Cassena, yes, definitely, that would be even nicer to use a nut milk! But if you don't have nut milk, water will work fine too.

Thank you so much for this recipe. It was so simple to put the whole chia and water and honey in the vitamix and give it a quick blend. Talk about a fast extremely satisfying breakfast.

I made this recipe without the raisins as I didn't have any. I put walnuts, strawberries and blueberries on top and it was delicious! I also didn't put the cashew milk on as all I had was rice milk and I think it would have ruined it.

Similar to Q. Xavier, in addition to your list, I add bananas, a lil maca powder, a ton of cinnamon, and a bit of Himalayan sea salt. The salt really draws all the flavors out. I crave this dish! Not to mention the energy it provides. I have to remind myself to eat lunch.

when making other chia puddings or porridge, do you always use milled chia seeds? Is this a bad meal for diabetics?

In Philadelphia we have a tendency to over-do things. Love of sports. Love of Neighborhoods. Love of Food and Drink. A general distain for all things interfering with these, especially the Eagles, Flyers and Phillies... but I digress.

With that in mind, I have over-done your recipe with by adding Shelled Hemp Seeds, Maca Root Powder, Probiotics, Coconut Water and a smidge of Agave Nectar in the blender (All Raw, of course). Then throwing bananas, dates, pistachios and macadamias on top, again all raw. I sometimes sprinkle some celtic sea salt, if I am in a particularly savory mood, but generally this approach (albeit the proverbial "kitchen sink") satisfies all taste, texture and nutrient cravings for several hours.

Without your recipe I wouldn't have the foundation/base to go this H.A.M. on Chia Porridge...

...For that alone I thank you. My stomach also thanks you about 2x a day.

Thank you Lady Laura-Jane.

Yum! I just made this and I can definitely say this will be a staple in the breakfast recipe box! I made it with almond milk (added a little extra to thin it a bit more), local honey, and fresh strawberries from the farmer's market. I went a little heavy on the coconut because I love it, and it turned out great. Tastes just like my strawberries and cream oatmeal from when I was a kid! Thanks, Laura-Jane!

That is the first time I have experienced Chia seeds and they are very interesting little seeds and good for you too. A new breakfast treat for me - thank you! Truthfully tonight I am having it for dinner, lol.

Hey there!

What would be a good replacement of raisins??
I was thinking dates (those are my favorite!)
What do you think??

Thanks, you are awesome!

Hi there!
I am just curious as to how healthy this recipe is.
I calculated the calories in this porridge and it's near 1000!! Is this one serving? I love this recipe and it is delicious! (thank you) but I'm having a difficult time losing weight
Eating Raw and am wondering what your thoughts on chia seeds are in relation to weight loss.
Thanks so much!! I love the recipes!!

Hi Mdy,

I don't count calories, but I don't think your math is correct. Chia seeds in this recipe would be around 350 calories + coconut + and a few other odds and ends. Much less than 1000 cals

I prepared this recipe with chia seeds and it was so delicious! I used 2/3 ground flax seeds to 1/3 whole and the texture was great! I also added a bit of vanilla. Thank you for creating such a delectable recipe.
