Yield
1 large smoothie
Ingredients
- 2 bananas (peeled)
- 2 medium oranges (peeled - use a knife, cut generously around the edges to remove a lot of the white rind as well as the skin)
- 1 apple (chopped)
- 1 cup spinach (or more)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)
Recipe Directions
- 1. Add all ingredients to blender. Place soft ingredients like bananas in first, because that's what I was taught!
- 2. Blend in your high-speed blender until nicely smooth.
- 3. Your green smoothie is ready! Pour green smoothie into cup(s) or a large mason jar for on-the-go goodness.
The Rawtarian's Thoughts
By The Rawtarian I have been a raw vegan for over two four years. And for breakfast almost every single day I have a green smoothie. And I am still not sick of them yet, if you can believe that! I can make them super quickly, and I always keep the main ingredients on hand.
If you have any trust in me believe me when I tell you that in order to make a tasty green smoothie you absolutely must have a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or a Blendtec. Otherwise it'll be chunky and grainy and downright disgusting and you'll have to pinch your nose to get it down. When it comes to green smoothies texture is everything and high-speed blenders are going to take a slightly disgusting chunky mixture and turn it into a silky smoothie like the one in this photo that actually tastes delicious--like a treat. Texture is everything when it comes to this green smoothie recipe.
This may not be the most exciting green smoothie recipe in the world, but it's what I have for breakfast almost every morning so I figured that you'd like to know what I have for breaky! What I like about it as well is that it's not too expensive, since bananas are inexpensive here in Canada.
To clean your blender: Add 1-2 cups of water into your blender immediately and blend again to aid in cleaning process. Take carafe to sink and finish rinsing/cleaning blender right away. I am not a good housekeeper but the one rule in my house is to NEVER let the Vitamix carafe sit uncleaned. NEVER! Why? Because then if I'm lazy later on and it's not clean then I won't use it, then I won't know what to make, and I'll just eat nuts for dinner because I'm too lazy to clean the blender. NEVER store recipes in your blender for this reason. :)
This recipe makes quite a large green smoothie, it's a perfect breakfast for 1 person. This is my go-to breakfast.

Lynne and Barbara, Just wanted to add that when you are starting something new (healthy eating) it is very wise to get into a groove and make the same thing (something that you like) again and again until you are sick of it - and then you can move on to something else. That way you don't feel unsure about what to make, especially in the morning when you are in a rush!

I have been on green smoothies for just 5 days. I'm completely new at this. Then for lunch I have a completely raw salad, but continue eating with the family at dinner. Can't quite get my head around preparing a whole different meal. Although our dinner always had a big raw salad as part of it. This is my year for taking control back after some very poor eating over a few years. I'm excited by what I'm reading and trying. My raw crackers are in the dehydrator as I write. Thank you so much for your generous sharing. Looking forward to the journey.

Hi! Just found this recipe and plan to try it for breakfast tomorrow. Was just wondering if there is a big downside to making this the night before? I know that with raw juice, "they" say that it starts to lose nutrients (or something) right away, so best to make it right before you drink it. But, I just can't seem to get it together enough in the morning, to prepare my breakfast and still get to work on time. So, I used to make my raw juice the night before, even though "they" said not to, because I figure it was better than not having it at all! But now I want to replace juicing with smoothies, so I was just wondering, for my own knowledge, if it's okay (or, okay enough) to make it the night before?

Hi Jennifer, I am not concerned about the nutrient loss, but I do find that it doesn't taste as good the next day. It might separate and need a quick blend in the blender to get back to normal. One thing that you could try is one of my breakfast cereals instead - you can lay the dry ingredients out, and then just chop an apple and add milk to it in the morn. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your speedy reply! I did make it the night before, and in the morning it wasn't so much separated as a little ... congealed. But I just stirred in some water and it was fine. Very tasty! I changed the recipe slightly ... only used one banana, and used a cup and a half of kale instead of spinach. So, maybe the congealing was due to that! But anyway, it was super tasty and I will definitely do it again. Thanks!

CONGEALED is EXACTLY the way to describe it lol. As soon as I read what you wrote memories came flooding back to me lol! Glad it worked for you.

I love your writing style. Your advice is so applicable. Great smoothie, I usually have my greens in juices but this is quite nice. I almost omitted the cinnamon but I like it!

Why do you say to remove the pith of the oranges? That's the most nutritious part! ;)

Hi Mike! You are right... It is the most nutritious part... but if your blender is crappy it might have difficulty blending up the pith :) If your blender is strong you're good to go though :)

I'm looking forward to trying some of your recipes. Do you have any advice for the recipes regarding eating for diabetes?

I love your smoothie recipes, you have even inspired me to experiment making my own smoothies and I discovered that in green smoothies, cilantro is actually really tasty. makes everything tastes super fresh and clean. have you tried it?

Mmm! I love cilantro, but I have never used it in a smoothie! Must try this. In fact, next year I really must grow cilantro in my garden, because it seems to be pretty expensive here. Thanks for the inspiration for my garden for 2013! I have done parsley in a green smoothie, I think this would probably be equally as good.

I sometimes put a teaspoon of bee pollen in green smoothies, for protein. Can you think of any reason not to?

I don't use it myself, but I don't see why that would be a problem. Some people would say that it is not "vegan" - also, you would want to be careful when serving to others because some people are allergic to it. Other than that sounds good to me!

I made this for breakfast, and it was very yummy; but it wasn't as creamy as I had imagined. I forgot to add the chia seeds. Is that why it wasn't creamier? It still tasted very good, but I was just curious because I've never used chia seeds before.

Yes, chia seeds are what make it "silky" (it's not really creamy, but it is smooth.) There is a difference in my mind :)

I love smoothies, and am going to try this over the weekend. I am the kind of person that finds something I like and have no problem eating it every day. I hope this becomes my new breakfast staple.

I am the same! I will have the same thing every day for like a month, and then one day I go - nope, no more! And then I go on to the next thing :) And have that everyday for a long time

What is your current breakfast staple? Is there another smoothie that you've moved on to for now?

I am really budget-conscious right now and this is what I have most mornings. It's boring but it is pretty cheap and tastes good in my high-speed blender: 1 banana, 1 orange, 1 apple, romaine lettuce, water + 3 cubes ice. Plus, then I don't have to "think" about it

That sounds like my kind of recipe... easy and with few ingredients. Thank you!!!

Are the chia seeds supposed to be soaked first or added dry?
